Summary

Tremulous is a free, open source game that blends a team based FPS with elements of an RTS. Players can choose from 2 unique races, aliens and humans. Players on both teams are able to build working structures in-game like an RTS. These structures provide many functions, the most important being spawning. The designated builders must ensure there are spawn structures or other players will not be able to rejoin the game after death. Other structures provide automated base defense (to some degree), healing functions and much more...

Player advancement is different depending on which team you are on. As a human, players are rewarded with credits for each alien kill. These credits may be used to purchase new weapons and upgrades from the "Armoury". The alien team advances quite differently. Upon killing a human foe, the alien is able to evolve into a new class. The more kills gained the more powerful the classes available.

The overall objective behind Tremulous is to eliminate the opposing team. This is achieved by not only killing the opposing players but also removing their ability to respawn by destroying their spawn structures.

Feature List

* Flexible particle system - 99% of the in-game visual effects are configured using particle scripts.
* 16 buildable structures with in-game functions.
* Play as several alien classes with unique abilities.
* Customize your setup as a human and buy new weapons, armour and items.
* Scale the walls and ceilings as an alien waiting for an unsuspecting human.
* Realistic physics and motion - no bunny hopping or quick back peddling.
* Flexible map system - animated mapobjects, triggering, light flares, etc.
* Large weapons system - don't like the weapon you have? Sell it and buy a different one, dozens of options.

Sounds pretty cool, I don't have time to play it atm... but it sounds alot like Gloom for Quake 2, and that's a good thing.
Just watched the promo vid, looks really hectic... just like Gloom, can't wait to give it a whirl.

I agree it sounds ALOT like ns. Can't really knock them if they're giving it away for free tho.

Upon reading, I thought it was one of the earlier betas for NS :P

Is it strictly Multiplayer?

From what I've read and seen, yeah.

Also, it's not like NS at all.
Except for the whole human vs. alien thing.

It's more like Gloom for Q2.
You have an engineer-esque class that builds stuff on both sides, that's pretty much as far as the whole RTS thing goes.

i ll give it a try.... thx for the link.

ce ya

Is it any good? I'm eager to try it out, seems cool.

Downloading the promo video.

EDIT: Nice video... seems like fun. Think I'll try it. :)

I'd say with over 500 players and 90+ servers, it's pretty good.
I'll give it a go in the morning.

Hell, I only found out about it through Moddb's MOTY 2006 thing, through the "Follow the Freeman" mod thread.
I'd say it was a nice find, it seems to have a pretty solid community too.

I've played it and... it's better than I thought, really. The gameplay is solid, although it can be a little overwhelming at first but you really get hang of it after a while, especially the basic stuff.

I've managed to play as aliens the most, mostly due to the marines always being overused. I did however manage to get to play as marines before I quit.
I like the aliens most though, at least of what I've played so far.

I hope, in future releases, that they can get first person models for the aliens, similar to Natural Selection. When I played I didn't know if I was mauling the marines or not, though the moans and blood are pretty obvious.

For those who's wondering why there isn't an option menu, don't panic (like I did :p). There is an option menu, you just need to open the console "~" then type in the following, without the quotes, "\menu ingame_options" and press enter. If you want to exit the options menu just press escape.

If someone is still wondering if it's worth it or not, just give it a try. The installer isn't more than 95MB and the game takes around 100MB.
This will keep me occupied for a while. :)

Oh, and thanks xlucidx for posting this. If you wouldn't I would've never seen this game in the first place. :)

Don't mind the text on the left side of the screen, you can turn of the help messages in the options menu. I wanted them on because... you know, I'm a newbie. ;)

I played a little and really enjoyed it, it plays a lot like gloom. One thing that bothered me was a little bit of delay between firing the rifle and when it hit, like it was lagging but my ping was low. This and some pretty high movement speeds led to some pretty annoying deaths for me. It is worth a try if you are bored.

Heh.

I just played for a couple hours.
Damn, this is pretty fun.
Players aren't complete assholes to newbies.
Easy to pick-up.
I'll definitely be playing this for awhile.

I'm using [HL2.net] as my tag, so if anyone sees that give me a shout. :p

I totally suck at this. I played for about 15 minutes with the aliens and killed nobody and for about 7 minutes with humans and killed 3.

As a human I was being insta killed in one bite and could barely aim at those ants running around, or was getting mauled by some dragoon thingy charging straight at me, while I unloaded, and hitting me in the face.

As aliens I was running up to people (that were sliding all over the place and pretending they're walking by moving their legs) and biting them or at least touching them with the other basic alien that supposedly damages upon touch, but the humans had no problem spraying at me and killing me. I didn't even know whether I was hitting them (no crosshairs, no attack animation). One time I saw blood come out, while I bit some dude three times, but he spun around spraying his gun and killed me.

When I got my first kill after dieing like 15 times, it wasn't even satisfying...

Sounds like it isn't your kind of game.
It's pretty much exactly like Gloom for Q2, I played that for about 2 1/2 years.
