Is this Trespasser you ask??!!
Yes it is its called Trescom Isle
and you can get it over at
www.trescom.org B)

I thought that game blew chunks, the biggest gaming disaster in the world dubbed "physics gone wrong" by Valve and some other people.. I dont own it so somebody tell me if this shits cool

Heh, doesn't look bad...I remember tresspasser. Of course at the age I bought it, I was mostly preoccupied with looking at the...ground :naughty:

I thought it was a good game, but a little barren really. I enjoyed the physics though, even if they were a little rough. It was really ahead of its time in that sense.

Someone seriously needs to make Trespasser 2 with the source engine. That would rock.

I don't know, a game with nothing but dinosaurs sounds really friggin boring to me.

Tresspasser's physics engine was a very early version of the Havok engine :D

Physics have come a long way.

Behold as I drop my watch ont he floor and subsequently drop a large weight on it...Look in awe as it first lands with a thud and then a crunch as the weight crashes down upon it...

...I liked that watch :(

the game definitely had ideas ahead of its time like the physics and using the hand interface, it could definitely be made better with today's tech, and personally, any game that lets you kill dinos is ok with me

Yeah, the hand interface is brilliant if someone could get it working correctly. The game was truly ahead of it's time, many of the things they did game developers still aren't close to reaching yet. HL2 is the first game to truly use physics in the gameplay (no, watching boxes fall over in other games does not fall under "gameplay").

They were too ambitious, but to be honest I'd rather have more teams like them that actually progress the genre rather than a slew of generic FPS games that we have now (with a few notable exceptions).

Hi TaiFong,

I've played a number of FPS, including most every Half-Life amd HL mod many times over. I've played through Trespasser many times, and am now working my way through TC-Isle, (under Linux by the way...)

I'll tell you this: Even after all these years, I've never experienced the level of fear that is experienced in Trespasser when you're in those foggy woods and hear that low growl.... somewhere near...

It is extremely disconcerting, especially when you're out of ammo!

Also, the guys who worked on TC-Isle and the other Trespasser mods, have done what the original team abandoned. That is, improved performance and stability. Many of the bugs that were originally complained about, (and rightly so) are a thing of the past. :)

And with today's tech and the dedication of a handful of Trespasser enthusiast, it has! Another factor which led to its downfall is that most of the boxes back in 1998 just weren't capable of doing the game justice. Today's computers easily do! :)

By the way, those dino's AREN'T easy to kill. If you're lucky enough to score a headshot, one can go right down. They bob their heads around often and it is extemely difficult to get a clear shot. Sometimes you can empty six rounds of .44 magnum into one and it will still take you down!

Many of the movements built into Anne's hand weren't really necessary anyway. Her arm and hand can be configured to work quite easily.

This goes to the heart of why, after all these years, there is still an avid and dedicated Trespasser community out there, still hacking the game and making new mods. The TresCom community is still fascinated with how far ahead of it's time Trespasser was.

They were too ambitious, but to be honest I'd rather have more teams like them that actually progress the genre rather than a slew of generic FPS games that we have now (with a few notable exceptions).
Amen to that!! :)

I've been playing Trespasser again the last several days (with the high-res/high-detail packs, haven't tried the TC-Isle level yet), and am still impressed with how much was accomplished technically, and with the gameplay itself, which has a strong element of exploration and immersion, and goes beyond a simple corridor shooter.

The audio environment in particular is superb, and is crying out for a greater quantity of graphic detail ala Farcry or Vietcong.

You can sense that they simply ran out of time and performance headroom, and the internal strife and frustration within the development team is legendary. Even with my PC that is 20x the power of what was available in 1998, the game still barely achieves 30fps at 1024x768, and their inability to work out the 'sliding friction' physics bug and improve framerate must have severely limited the level designers in how much detail and gameplay elements they were allowed to put into the game.

I distinctly recall downloading the Trespasser demo when it first came out (I was a huge fan of the Descent games at the time), and while loving being able to affect the world in such ways as shooting out the supports on the trailer in the demo, I was literally getting less than 1 frame/sec performance on my K6/1 + 3dfx card when a Raptor approached, and had to shrug my shoulders: a non-purchase.

Regardless, Trespasser is and was a remarkable game, and it's a shame Crytek dumped their original ideas of a 'sequel'. Hopefully a true sequel that returns to the roots of the Jurassic Park/Trespasser franchise -- and by this I mean a realistic island environment, with true-to-life dinosaurs from different ages populating it, that the player must explore to survive, using real weapons and physics-based problem-solving -- will be picked up by a developer.

Can you imagine some of the gameplay elements of FarCry being incorporated into such a Trespasser2 game? Think of having to row a makeshift raft across a lake with giant lochness-monster Ichthyosaurs breaching the surface, while a quick look through binoculars shows you must land on a beach where 30ft-long prehistoric crocodiles await.

Think of being attacked from the air by swooping Pteranodons who grab you in their claws, or onto whom you might need to jump for a wild ride across a chasm. Swarms of small ankle-biting baby dinos, and huge boss T-Rex dinos. Perhaps camps of angry 'dino-hunters' who would just as soon kill you as not. A lot of the stuff is inherent already in FarCry, and the physics possibilities are demonstrated in HL2.
