trouble with starting Half life 2 from steam

It has been quite fustrating, when i try to load HL2 from steam, the green window shows up that its loading, but once its done nothing happens, there is no game... nothing comes up, just the desktop staring back at me... the same goes for CS:S too. I have tried to remedy this by reinstalling... didnt work, i even tried updating my graphics driver but still nothing. If anyone can help with this i would be most grateful...

*Puts hand on shoulder* I feel the same pain too, buddy. This is exactly the same problem I have with mine. I haven't played anything Steam related for 4 months now. I just want to play Ravenholm again. ):

Have you tried uninstalling all your games, uninstalling Steam, then re-installing Steam to a different folder and re-installing the games?

managed to fix it now now, i have winXp, so right click on hl2 icon, go to properties and then compatibility, and run it on windows 2000, worked for me! hurrah!
