If I told you that a handful of Canadian university students were attempting to rebuild the ancient city of Troy in all it’s legendary glory, you’d probably look at me as if I had a small mythical creature on my nose and back away slowly. However, the guys and gals at Sherbrooke Uni have finally reached the end of their semester- and in these winter months they’ll be releasing Troy: Divine Playground to the masses. [br] [br] The Troy team aren’t finished just yet though, and to whet our appetite for the coming spectacle they’ve developed an in-game movie showcasing many of Troy’s features. They haven’t *ahem* officially released this yet, but a quick look in their media section will reveal it’s ready for download. [br] [br] Just click here, in fact. [br]

[br]Having watched the video, I must admit mixed feelings for Troy: Divine Playground. Positively, the character models and weapons look amazing, the combat is frantic and there are a load of inventive ideas such as ladders, spirits and divine powers. However, there also seem to be a lot of animation bugs that occur when attacking with both ranged and melee weapons; and the environment itself doesn’t look very impressive. Hopefully the team will manage to iron out any discrepancies before the final release. [br] [br] To view the Divine Playground website, click here.

looks really cool but the melee fighting seems to suffer from the same crappy hit detection as CS:S/DOD:S.

I think it looks inredible wicked cool.

<()|=|=|O=========>

was actually looking forward to this mod....but it turned out to be crap..sorry but too mythological for me.

It looks alright. AI seems a bit lame, the animations are a bit weird, but it might be just the video. Plus, the explosions are a bit out of place in that enviroment.

Other than that, I'll play it when it's released, without a doubt.

I'll definately be downloading this, but I don't know if it will capture my attention for very long :(

It just looks fun to me...and a cool idea...and well done. maybe the animations sometimes look a bit weird (I didn't notice it to be honest) but it looks rock-solid, dependable, fun for the whole family!

Video was great, but the Papa Roach song kinda killed the atmosphere

it doesn't look like it will be a very big hit to me, but im sure they all gained valuable experience and some of it was very well done but overall i dont think it will appeal at least to me, but i will try it

When i first heard about this a few months back and watched one of their first Interview/Trailer type things it grabbed my attention immediatly, cannot wait for this, just downloading the new trailer now.

too much of a cluster fark for me to enjoy it too long but ill definitally download it.

Looks crap to me. Trailer did nothing to recommend itself (fight off the hordes of 4 attackers!), and why why whyyy use Papa Roach? Blatant copyright breach aside, if you make your own content including music then make your own damn trailer music.

I am pretty sure that the mod will only have this single release, as the game is a project in university studies. Their deadline was december 2005, at the end of the semester. This could evolve into a cool mod however that evolution will never happen.
I look at it sort of like hidden beta 1, it has changed drastically over time.
mod shout out aside, I hope the that things work out, who knows???? :cheese:

Definitely not bad for a University project.

They should code their own hit detection code like the Age of Chivalry folk did.

It looks great in a lot of things, but there are some definite problems in there. If they're fixed, it will be awesome, if not it won't get past "meh" for me.

The main problem in this one seems to be the AI (assuming the other soldiers were AI). They acted rather stupid, not at all like they were in a battle, which ruined the whole battle atmosphere.

Then there was some shit song at the end. Ugh.

The whole mod is going to blow asshole. What fun is a melee combat game (that, first of all, looks like COMPLETE SHIT) that is predominantly throwing? Then it's basically a shooter. The team in charge of this game didn't do a single thing right. Horrible, just terrible.

Gotta love people that slag it off before they have even tried it, not a fair way to judge a game imo.

It looks pretty cool for me. And you negative people seem to think that modders can pull a great game out of their ass in like 3 months. They did this in one semester, and I am willing to bet a good deal of the time wasnt even working with the game. Its a school project, just be happy they are releasing it at all.

I think the models are good, some of the animations are decent, most are pretty hastily done. Seems to be only one map, the weapons are cool (even though they arent historically accurate). Seige equipment is pretty cool, divine attacks are looking good. The bow animation is crap, look where its actually pointing when you shoot lol. I will definately download the mod, and give props to the students who worked on it.

No, I don't think they can pull a great game out of their asses in 3 months, no one can. If I made a shit mod in 2 minutes would you give me credit because I hadn't spent enough time on it before releasing? No, you wouldn't. Look at the number of games that get slated for releasing too early - a crap game is a crap game, and I don't care if a one-armed mentally-handicapped poverty-stricken aids-ridden orphan from Chernobyl made it - if it isn't fun to play, I'm not going to play it. I know now you're going to tell me that I should actually play it rather than judge it on the trailer but tbh if a team can't put together a good trailer I doubt they can put together a good mod, and there are so many mods to choose from you have to judge them on something (I don't have time to download them all and try them all, as much time as I do have). If when it comes out people say, yay it's great after all, I'll try it, but first impressions are incredibly bad.

I'd like to draw your attention to the fact that I've just discovered the player is killing his own team in half of the shots. That's why the AI often appears to be awful and unreactive to the player's presence.

No of course not. But then again, you arn't working under a deadline. These guys need to have it finished and playable by the end of the semester, so they have to cut corners. Normal modders dont have such restraints, they can take their time, as all the big mods have been doing for the past year. Its different for these guys, they are FORCED to not work on it as long as they would want to.

And no, I dont care if you make decisions based on the trailer only. But I DO care if you slander the people making the mod. Obviously they have put a lot of effort into this game, the modeling, mapping, coding etc. Then for you to just come in and say its "crap", being sarcastic, and telling them to make music just for the trailer, is completely disrespectful and unneccesary. They deserve some respect for the work they are going to release people for free... so just keep your remarks to yourself please.

Thanks for the positive comments guys.. as Sulkdodds said half of the action is against my own team to show the weapons in action. We are aware of the bugs with some of the animations. We integrated those at the last minute ourselves since some of the animators took off  PArt of the programming team had to do those animations and as you can tell it's not something we are very good at. We had to make some quick fixes in order to finish this in time and I'm sure you can understand the pressure we had to finish this :p

Don't worry these will get fixed before a release.. this is why we are not releasing in december as we stated on our website. We want to polish the artistic content but most of code wont need much rework as the game is very stable at the moment.

Good to hear. Thanks for clearing that team attack thing up for us Gus. Did you guys get graded on this yet?

Lol. That explains quite a bit :p

Krynn72, I know they're working to a tight deadline. Doesn't change my opinion on it. With regards to the music: 1, they broke the law. 2, they created their own music for the mod so why not use that (in fact for most of the trailer I think they did). Even if they don't want to use their own music there are plenty of open licensed songs available on the net, and as a plus it wouldn't be some generic rock song like you always have pasted over CS "ownage" videos. Using someone elses copyrighted music is just not acceptable.

This is a forum. Go look that up. Meanwhile I'm going to keep posting, and you can bite me.

All the music in the video is the in-game music we created. The added part as the end with the papa roach song was to make the video a little more spicy. We are not here to make money so are we breaking copyright laws? ..not really, we're just here to have fun aren't we?

We didn't get our grades yet but they seemed pretty thrilled :p

The music at the very beginning was from Batman Begins.

You lie!

^HAH, I really don't know what to respond :|.

The game looks amazingly cool/fun. I'm really looking forward to it.

I've learned that the funnest games often don't look the best on trailers and promos.

Well, I guess I should trust you since you've tried the game right?

Right?

Personally, I think it was a big mistake to publish a video, you're just paving the way for self-righteous pricks like Glo-boy who dare claim a game is "horrible, just terrible" without having even tried it. It's one thing to have doubts about a game after seeing a trailer (And a perfectly acceptable thing it is, and I have nothing against it) it's another to call it shit without having tested it for a second.

Yes, you are.

There's a very good thread on this forum about copyright breaches, and the article it linked to even specifically mentioned music on trailers. I suggest you read the small print on the Papa Roach cd that you doubtless legally own.
