interesting thing happened to me today with HL2.
I started up the game and left it on the main menu screen.

I then went about my day, and kinda forgot that I had it loaded and waiting to play.
well about 1/2 hour ago I came back to the PC and to my surprise "the memory could not be read" was on my screen!
I wasnt even playing!!!!
I realize that the game is running through that animated backgournd sequence while the menu is showing but come on!

so anyway, i regularly have intermittent problems like this, so i restarted the game... played for about 1/2 an hour and then got a blue screen of death... this time saying "page fault in non paged area" and it referred to ati3d.dll ( or some variant of that file name).

I have been running the "freeRam XP pro" utility for the last day, as per someone elses suggestion... as I type this, my free ram is 700MB (out of 1 gb)... i noticed after a crash, my available system memory was hovering around 200MB and constantly fluctuating between 170MB and 220MB... there are obviously some nasty memory leaks somewhere...

I am running the beta catalyst drivers, and have XP pro SP2 installed.
I also have a p4 2.6 ghz and a radeon 9600. and the ram is kingston hyperx.(4x256MB)

ironically, i spoke to 2 coworkers who have been playing hl2 for the last week... both are running some kind of cracked version... and neither has problems! one with a radeon 9800 and the other with a gforce 6800.

and here i paid 50$ for the damn game and cant play!!!!

cripes :( :(

oops

sorry guys, my catchy title in the previous post was intended to suggest to you all to "try" simply leaving the main menu screen up for a few hours and see if the game crashes all by itself.
