So I read up on overclocking last night and tried it with success. Sometimes though I would get an error with Prime95 which suggested in running a higher votalge setting. I need to know what ranges I should be running at for clock speeds. There is a setting in my BIOS though that says auto. How do I know there is enough juice running to the CPU though? I'm trying to see how far I can go with this before getting a new comp. My specs are:
Manufacturer:
Shuttle
Processor:
Pentium 4 2.80 GHZ
Memory:
1 GB
Hard Drive:
127 GB
Video Card:
ATI X800XL 256 MB AGP
Monitor:
Sceptre 22" HD Widescreen gaming edition
Sound Card:
Realtek AC'97 Audio
Speakers/Headphones:
Platronics Gamecom Pro 1
Keyboard:
HP Wired Office Keyboard
Mouse:
Logitech Marble Mouse
Mouse Surface:
Glass desk
Operating System:
Windows XP Home Edition (Service Pack 2)

I can't upgrade either because I'm not gonna get another AGP card. Even if I wanted to, my small form factor can't handle a PSU more than 200W. ;( Also most cards are 2 slotters and are too long and wide for it. I don't wanna pay for 2, 1GB of RAM sticks either. So my other question is if this overclocking thing works out, should I hold out until the end of this year on upgrading? They are already declaring dual core CPU's old and DX10 is way too expensive right now. I doubt my computer can handle Episode 2 on high settings or Bioshock LOL! :D

Agreed.:dozey:

do you even know what "bumping" means in forums......? also to answer your question, if you have less then 200w then you are just barely making it. your video card most likely maxed it out. i wouldnt recommend at all doing any overclocking. theres a reason why its telling you to run at a higher voltage setting, its because you dont have enough juice in the psu.

I used to bump topics when selling crap online, and since I was out the door to work when he bumped his thread, I couldn't answer him for lack of time, so I bumped some more by agreeing with him pumping. Are you gonna educate me or are you going to help the guy? Teach me what else "Bump" means except F#@*king.

did both in the same post :p

That's a moronic statement actually. First off, if I didn't have enough electricity, then how am I talking to you now? Second off I referred to the help file which suggested raising the voltage setting. So are you gonna tell me how much voltage I should set it too for a range of clock speeds? Also should I upgrade later this year or this Summer? Cause if not then gtfo out of my thread and let others help me and other people who want to find a solution. :dozey:

You know, some of us don't actually work here. We help others cuz we want to. Knowing comps or not, you're the one stuck with something.
But you can't insult and demand help like we're your customer service.
Don't try and OC that antique piece Falavel without getting decent PSU first, and even then I doubt your OCing result would have any big impact on anything, you're just beating up an old horse.
Start saving and upgrade soon.

Good Luck.

i never said your pc wasnt working. i said you didnt have enough power. your cpu is lowering the voltage and asking you to add more voltage which you do not have.....understand now???

I don't care if I'm beating an old horse or not. All I care is OC'ing the last bit I can get out of it. I do have the voltage to do. It was the help file on the program which suggested it with other solutions. I know it's a fossil but it can still play F.EA.R pretty darn well and I'm sure it will play Episode 2 great but not with all the whiz bangs. All I want to know is voltage ranges for certain frequencies.

go ahead oc and fry your components. i reallly dont care if your psu is overloaded.....

Would someone mind explaining to me what it means to "Bump" a post? I was sick on the day that memo was posted. I have often seen it used, but I still don't know the meaning of it.

Hool10,
I saw that you have a Shuttle system, can you give me the model number? The reason being,I need to know what mobo is in the PC. Also, the CPU, do you know whats the Cache on it? I'll take a look at the specs and go from there.

I would like to take a neutral stand & say that I do highly advise you to look into getting a more powerful PSU. The PSU that it was shipped with, is enough to run the PC and little more. Any fiddling by Overclocking, *could* cause system errors. Just looking out for you man, thats all.

As for overclocking to begin with, I love to do it. I'm about as far from being an expert as I am from walking on the moon, but I still enjoy overclocking. The benefits can be very rewarding. Even on an older 2.8GHz CPU like the one you have installed. Just gotta make sure you have the power to back it up.

Get me that info & i'll see what I can do.

as threads are posted, it pushes the threads below it to the bottom. continuously posting in a thread will keep it at the top and on the first page so it will get peoples attention.

I know that I may not have the power to supply it but I'm gonna try anyways. I just wanna get that last bit out until I can get a new rig up. The model number is: SB61G2 http://global.shuttle.com/Product/Barebone/brb_OverView.asp?B_id=51
I just remembered I had bought a new PSU for it a little while ago and it actually has 250W on it. I might go with Shuttle again idk. They have some really sexy computers that are the size of a shoebox: http://us.shuttle.com/SDXi.aspx I guess my pc really must be a fossil now because my comp can't even handle the size of a modern GPU or a 450W PSU and the new ones can. *The cache on it is:
  1. L1 Data Cache 8KP 4-way set associative 64-byte line size
  2. Trace Cache 12 Kuops 8-way set associative
  3. L2 Cache 512KB 8-way set associative 64-byte line size

Bump.

Great, thanks for clearing that up for me.

Ok I have been experimenting with the voltage settings. If I boosted the voltage to 1.62V and set the clock speed to 204, it would fail. If I put it at 1.60V though, it would pass. So I guess I will keep it the same until the next time it fails. The program says I would fail if "FATAL ERROR: Rounding was 0.5, expected less than 0.4." Is that the point that I have to go back? Also when I use the hmonitor utility should I be worried if the mainboard temp goes to the yellow zone and the "Temp 3" one as well? My CPU stays at 48 degrees though.
