U.S. firms help China censor fr**dom, d*mocr*cy

They do what they need to do.........

Horrible. I generally like Microsoft but this has made them lose a lot if not all respect from me. I hope they reverse this decision.

this is just crazy, China starting to cross the line in humna rights. The next world war will be against them I'm sure.
This is sugar coated gumdrops compared to most human rights offenses China has perpetrated. It's sad it is that way, too.

china are following the footsteps of north korea, thier best ally, thier future friend in world war 3.

Microsoft has to do what makes most money for their shareholders. If they don't they are breaking US laws.

China has to do what they need to keep the country running in the way Government believes is right. All governments take certain freedoms from their citizens and all populations give their Government the power to do so. In the UK we have tight gun control, this makes us feel safer. In the US lax gun controls make you feel safer. If either Government tried to change the laws against the will of the people, then the people just would not stand for it.

The population of a country gives up freedoms that make them feel safer. The population of China gave up the freedoms that come with a capitalist/democratic ideology for a communist/oppressive ideology for a reason. I say, they made their bed let them lie in it, and if they change their mind they have an option. We bleat on about democracy as if marking an X on a piece of paper is the only way for a population to change the Government. Well that’s bullshit, if the majority of the Chinese want out then they’ll stage a coup.

meh they censor state-side ...I dont see how this is any different ..except for the obvious hypocritical nature of it all

Hey Rakurai,
I generally like Yahoo! too, but they are doing the same thing. Scary that this sort of thing goes on in the 21st century...but then again, look at what we censor in the US, even with all the supposed freedoms that we "have."

The hypocracy is rampant and bugs the heck out of me when a 13 year old child can walk into a bookstore and purchase American Pscho(arguably the most violently revolting book I have ever read--though still one of my favs, minus the gore), yet I can't walk into a cinema(when I was ~20) to watch Showgirls(please, no flames here) without being carded twice! Of course, the same child cannot then go into a gaming store and purchase the latest GTA because it might affect him too adversely and cause him to go on a killing spree.

If this were the EU, Janet Jackson would just be another has-been performing at a sporting event, but since this is a land of puritanical hypocrites, there were shockwaves and backlashes sent all over the place and the crackdown/witchhunt begins. We went so far back in the 90s as to seriously consider ousting a President from office for a bl0wj0b from an intern, yet no one has seriously uttered the word "impeach" under the rule of Dubya the Hun. Scary times indeed...

I can't wait to see what some innovative techie rebels in China do to keep freedom alive. Would probably make a great book...to ban.

Censorship like that however is different. The purpose of that censorship is to "protect children". Its moronic in my opinion but it is a far cry from outright censoring something from all parts of the population like what China is doing. Besides if you think censorship of that sort is bad in the US then check out some of the laws they have in Germany for governing games.

China is a very complicated country, it takes a lot more than simple notions to understand it.

As for corporations - their number 1 concerns are money and influence. If that means helping the political parties censor speech, they'll do it.

And it's not as if our own governments are making a stand against it. We're gladly letting Microsoft do this. Our governments are just as bad as their's for letting this happen.

Also Disney sponsor the communist party youth.

Tells you where our hearts and feelings really are.

Freedom and democracy come second to business and profit.

germany is a good example of what happens when the gaming community allows itself to be legislated to near death

i read the same article on news.com.com a week ago i belive, and it just stated that it was all microsofts doing seeingas there is no law against it, and microsoft kissing china's ass

But not if you're in China, where the totalitarian government is leery of the Internet and hostile to the merest mention of such ideas as freedom

Chinas not totalitarian.

Starting to cross the line? China's been living across the line since the beginning of modern history.

Your absolutly right. Do you know where the name china came from?? The first Emperor. That guy was ruthless and it still stands today. But I don't think this will cause a world war. It's not a crime to sensor something, even if it is democracy and other such words. Besides USA companies are helping them doing that.

And it is thier government, not ours. The last time someone thought they needed to educated, the almost destroyed millions of peoples ways of life.

That is a ludicrously inaccurate statement.

how do you mean?

return to castle wolfenstein for one ...uhmmm Half-life was too

Half-Life? Why, what was in there they didn't like?

Germany has laws that prohibit killing people in games. I think in Half-Life the marines were replaced by robots. Anything involving Nazis is outright banned, I think (though movies are ok? Bleh, someone who knows better than me can explain).

GTA III was banned in Australia, edited (removed the hookers) and re released
GTA VC was censored here too (removed everything to do with sex, butchered cutscenes etc)

Postal 1 & 2 are banned here (AFAIK)

Hitman 2 had some serious ban talk about it (but none of the others)

Manhunt is banned here

Duke nukem 3d was censored (but 3drealms stuck a little unlocking patch on the cd for us! :p)

showing a person in a Game in a in-humane situation is illegal also swa stickas are also
illegal Blood shouldnt be red (althoe aint aint that bad right now) back when Resi came out Blood was grey I hate Germany. in 8 years max Germany will ruled by Nazis again cuz the politcians here are so dumb and make the people so mad that there allready voting for the nu NPD

Trust me, it's worse here. Games aren't really regulated strictly (I could buy HL2 when I was 13 no questions asked), but films are. Any film related to local politics is automatically banned.

Umm... and where are you? You're location thing tells us all you're "in a bell jar".

Inaccurate how? Because I didn't elaborate on the details, like, as long as it’s within the law. I assumed that was a given. Hmm, I suppose if Bill Gates still owns over 50% of the shares then he still gets carte blanche, is that what you mean?

Yeah. We're screwed.

yes you are:

"Various state governments have laws that theoretically ban the transmission of any material "unsuitable for minors". They have never been enforced, and in the opinion of EFA are completely unenforceable"

it sets a precedent for future legislation that could make it enforceable ...scary stuff

State as in US State governments, or nation states? Bad stuff want to find out :[

They should focus less on the game, more on the people who sell it. I can walk into my K-mart, grab a copy of 25 for Life, and the guy at the counter would sell it to me, because it looks like he's raising money to go on another weed spree. Focus on the people, not the game.
