As part of the main quest, you're supposed to collect all four volumes of the mythic commentaries (or whatever that thing was called) in order to proceed but it seems I have sold off Volume 1 by accident... Is it necessary to have all 4 books in possession to continue continue the main quest?

If you want 1 and 2 they are found in Bruma, although this will require some lock picking skills. Here is what you do, you have two options.

1. To the west of Bruma is something called Bruma caves, go in and go through a pretty short passage to Jeerl's basement, open the basement (It's a hard) and there will be two books laying there.
2. You could use the front door to his house, but his basement is a bit tricky to find. Look down and walk on the carpet, on the side there should be the trap door jutting out slightly. It seems Jeerl is a very paranoid Mythic dawn member.
