Unable to change sound settings

I've just started using headphones with HL2, and because the sound turned a bit strange I tried changing the audio stettings from "2 Speakers" to "Headphones". Problem is, when I click on OK and go back to the game my changes seems to revert; the sound is no different and when I check the audi settings again nothing has changed from the original settings - it still says 2 Speakers. I use Vista and have a SigmaTel audio card, which has the latest (albeit old, November 2006) drivers.

if there is sigmatel audio control center or something like that, then you will need to make sure that is set to headphones as well.

It's always been like is, or at least since last year.
