this is what comes up when i try to start the game

i have the uk dvd retail version

anyone else have this problem or know a solution?

i have exactly the same problem, after 3 hours of searching i can find nothing on the net that is even slightly benificial to solving the problem, not even on the official sites. please someone help, or at least point me in the right direction. thanx

I got this error when I lowered my hardware acceleration (I'm having a texture problem with hl2). If your video card is set to full acceleration (Control panel -> display -> settings tab -> click "Advanced," Troubleshoot tab, put the slider to the right) And other settings are turned on (hardware-dependent), I think only a new video card with DirectX shader support will fix the problem.

This problem can also be caused if you're using dual monitors on some ATI cards (disable the secondary to play the game) or something else has stolen your directx (it has happened to me when I forgot to exit another game before starting CS:S).

thanx,ive managed to solve that problem.it now keeps crashing ingame,sumtimes when its loading somtimes when its saving,it also sometimes comes up with a blue screen then restarts the computer. any1 any idea whats happning?

ive sorted my problem, just had to update my drivers :E
