My Friend gave me the box of Half Life 2 that has 5 cds. However, I used umm a you know what to play it because the cd key is used.
I open up the game and unlocked all the chapers, 15 of them, and I can't play any of them except "Point Insertion" and "We don't go to RavenHome".
That means, when I click other chapers the game does nothing. This is the problem.
Also, the game is in 64 Bit Interactive mode if that might be the problem.

Ok this is what I did when I got the Half Life 2 box. I installed it from the 5 cds and I realized that it is installing Steam (regular) (It comes with the package).

I let it install completely into the Steam App. It was preloaded so all I had was the .gcf After it is finished I installed a you know what version of steam. Steam and you know what are in different directories. I dragged the all GCF from the Regular Steam directory to the steam app on a you know what version of steam. Than I uninstalled the regular steam.

I wonder did I do something wrong?
Below are details of my Laptop
Vista Ultimate 64 Bit
4 Gigs Ram
Nvidia 8600 GT I think

Here is what the console said.............

map load failed: d3_c17_01 not found or invalid

What you're doing wrong is pirating the game. I recommend you buy it.

And that's exactly why you're pirating it. All copies not using Steam are illegal. Thank you.

That's because it's only letting you play the demo which has "Point Insertion" and "We don't go to RavenHome" only. Copying the GCFs from the full HL2 and putting it into a Steam account which does not own the game will only let you play the demo. You Must own the game on that account to play the full game. There is no way to bypass it. If your Friend lent you the game then ask him for his Steam account so you can play.

If you want to play the game, you don't need the CDs unless you want pointless .gcf files, you need the cd-key. In your case it's already been registered to another Steam account...your friends.

If you wish to play his game, ask your friend for his account log in details and you'll be able to play straight away.

Playing the game without Steam and all that dodgy stuff you was talking talking about is illegal, and it will not be discussed here any further.
