unexplainable high pings

Ok, I dont know if this has to do with cs:s, my internet connection, or both. I just upgraded to dsl from 56k because it just became available in my area, but earlier today I got on cs:s and I had consant pings from 100-150, good enough for me to play. Then a couple hours later i get back on and everything is 500-1000 ping, which is even slower than my old 56k connection. Please help me figure out what is going on

It could be any number of things....most likely spyware. Open task manager and see how many processes you have running. I have 18 running including steam. Make sure you turn off any anti-virus software before running the game. If you think you may have spyware then do a google for Spybot or Ad-aware and do a scan, it probably won't get all of it but should help a bit. I have never used DSL so I don't know what your average ping should be, but I'm certain it should be under 200.

Also make sure you aren't joining servers that are on the other side of the world. There is a filter in steam you can use to filter servers for location and for ping. Hope you find a way to fix it, I hate lag too

hmm, ive already run adaware and spybot but it still happens. It seems kind of random when it does happen. and right now i had 28 processes running, does anyone have a list of vital processes so i can shutdown some of them?

are there any other computers on your LAN that could possibly be using bittorrents or things like that?

if not, id get a packet sniffer like ethereal, it will monitor all packets going in and out of your pc. a healthy system ready to game should have almost no activity while you start capturing packets. this can tell you a lot of info if you read it correctly.

Hmm, no idea, scan for viruses, spyware. Are you on a router? I suppose if you just got it your not. But check all the settings and such.

One day, I had pings of around 950. :O But they never happened again.
