Anti-government protests have broken out in the Libyan capital Tripoli for the first time amid recent unrest in the country.

Witnesses say the authorities have used live ammunition and tear gas in response. Gunfire can be heard across the city.

There are unconfirmed reports of clashes between pro- and anti-government protesters in central Green Square.

Libya has been hit by days of unrest.

Most of it has occurred in the east, where opposition to Libyan leader Colonel Muammar Gaddafi is strongest.

Reports from the eastern city of Benghazi say more than 200 people have died there after the Libyan military used heavy weapons against protesters.

Protesters have been demanding an end to Col Gaddafi's four decades in power, after the success of similar rallies in Egypt and Tunisia.

Correspondents say the spreading of unrest to Tripoli is a significant blow to Col Gaddafi's attempt to contain the protests to the east.

The brutal suppression of protests in Benghazi has been condemned by the US, UK and other Western nations.

thought of making another one

aparently some soldiers sided whit the protesters when they knew of mercenaries attacking them

also I am keeping a special eye in libya and iran cuz guess who is a buddy of him?

chavezgadafi.jpg

he gave him replics of the sword of bolivar, though he gives it to almost everyone, and the usual "we are brothers" stuff
and yeah chavez havent said anything about the protest in libya unlike the ones in egipt

so yeah if you ever wonder why I hate chavez so much just look at the pic up there

Muammar Qaddafi is another old ****ing asshole that needs to fall.

is like he is pulling every propaganda trick he can use and talks very nerviously and erratict

They're ****ing firing live rounds at MOURNERS of protesters who have died? Way to turn even more people on you. What the hell?

Here's a live news blog:

Apparently some members of Libyan military have defected to the protesters' cause, and the protesters are now seizing weapons, tanks, and jeeps. Shit just got real.

Absolutely atrocious that they're firing on the protesters like that. Maybe Qaddafi deserves more than simply being removed...

I'm glad to hear that they're able to seize weapons to use back against the military and that some of the military is defecting... however, that means this is likely to be an incredibly bloody revolution. Lots of people are going to die, and it may not turn out for the best. The civilian population may not have what it takes compared to the military, but I hope more and more of the military defects. Only the truly heartless are the ones who will remain firing on civilians.

200 hundred people dead. Jesus Christ. That old c*nt needs to bite the dust. The problem is that the international media is shut off from the country, so it's hard to say what's going on.

A unique thing about these revolutions and protests is that they're happening in a time where the internet is in full spring; suddenly, social networks like twitter and facebook are things to be taken seriously by politics. The egyptian military for example has started its own facebook page to try to get in peaceful dialogue with the protesters:

The videos I've seen on the news look like some pretty serious sh*t. The death toll is over 200, that's more than we saw in Egypt right?

Not sure but this is making Egypt look kinda tame, especially the rhetoric coming from the leaders.

Yeah, Ghadaffi is clinging on to power a lot more agrresively than Mubarak ever did. Scary shit.

this is so surreal that this sort of thing is happening.

What's really surreal is seeing this domino effect in action. I don't think anything of this magnitude has happened since the fall of the Soviet Union.

I was thinking that today, & it poses the question, where next?

Whatever comes next, I have a feeling revolution will spring up somewhere in Central or South America within a month.

And anywhere else where people are unhappy with their government.

I wont be that glad if something like that happens in my country, you see this guy is a friend of chavez, also since I am not there dont know if I could handle the pressure to know if my family is well after seeing so much death in libia, and if the comunications are completly blocked

foreigner ministry of my country say that "we hope a peacefull solution can be reached and whiout injerence form the empire" like allways

I am getting worried they might give asylum to gadaffi seriously

and to everyone who talked nice about chavez here,**** you

Qaddafi might very well end up in some Latin-American country. It wouldn't surprise me if it would actually be Venezuela.

It's crazy to stop and think that all of these uprising, these revolts... especially if they spread to more and more countries with oppressive rulers, are going to go down in history as being fairly epic.

I mean think about it, revolutions happen, but revolutions simultaneously in nations across a region, or even perhaps across the globe don't happen often in history. Might even be the first time this has ever happened.

I shall hereby declare this, the Domino Revolution sponsored by Domino's Pizza.

"We used to suck, just like these dictators... but we've revolutionized our pizza and you're revolutionizing your countries!"

Gaddafi had an epic rant today. He blamed the current unrest on everyone: the US, the UK and even Bin Laden.

The colonel is very adamant that he is gonna go out with a bang, but I am quite sure he will flee the country at some point. My bet is on Zimbabwe or some other dodgy African country.

@Raz
Something like this happened in 1848 over here on the old continent. Those revolutions didn't work out too well at the time, but they did start the final decline of the European monarchs' absolute powers. Sixty to seventy years later almost every country in Europe was a democracy. There are also resemblances with 1989, like the domino effect you mentioned, but it had more to do with the collapse of one big country that had kept the East European countries from being democratic: the USSR.

Eww, just saw some picture of guys literally torn in half. What the hell are they shooting at those poor people? D:

I would kill the old **** myself if I could. His speech today was ****ing insane.

Eww, just saw some picture of guys literally torn in half. What the hell are they shooting at those poor people? D:

One article I read was that they used high caliber machine guns generally reserved for shooting at airplanes.

they show some broadcast on the tv state station where they said they took control of the rebeled cities

sure is fake but still the wait worries me

So, apparently the Libyans believe Korean mercs are killing people. Our own ministry of foreign affairs are trying to correct this error, because such rumors are not very good for the continued health of our personnel in Libya.

On another note, I've heard that they used fighter planes against protesters? Is that confirmed? Because that is one of the craziest shit ever.

Muammar deserves exactly what is becoming of a genocidal dictator. He's ordering his troops to slaughter the protesters and his defecting soldiers executed for not doing so.

I hope this man dies slowly and horribly.

It is for the very reason that people like Muammar can exist, and attempt this Pyrrhic victory if challenged, that these dictators need to ****ing topple and something better put in their place.

I weep for all the bloodshed that is caused in the process though. I hope they Libyan people have a willpower stronger than the tyranny of Muammar.

Next will be Bahrain, they will probably reach a compromise, constituitional monarchy and probably more rights for the Shias. I had hopes for the Algerians, but it seems the lgerian police have thwarted attempts at protests, and the main opposition hasn't joined in yet.

And to think these protests started with a Tunisian setting fire to himself in protest.

Maybe the Libyans are big Battlefield 2 fans...

why would they invade ? Gaddafi won't be there for much longer.

It's a nice thought though, one liberated country help its neighbour in the same struggle. But meh, right now I just want this piece of shit have his guts spilled out in the desert, don't really care how it's done.

I know, same thoughts here.

Italy, the former colonial power in Libya, has close business links to Tripoli and voiced alarm at the prospect of the Gaddafi government collapsing.

"Would you imagine to have an Islamic Arab Emirate at the borders of Europe? This would be a very serious threat," said Foreign Minister Franco Frattini.

Are they worried about the illegal immigrants, because ever since this 'revolution' started the italian government have put out nonsense statements, they did it while Egypt was in turmoil, they are doing it now.

Just, not by you guys.

Please.

Just, not by you guys.

Please.

I don't want it by us. We have a terrible track record. I want it by the Egyptian people. And hopefully they don't choose a theocracy.

Gaddafi probably has this super-loyal power base - most likely his personal guard - and will likely really do fight till he's dead.

And as always, People without guns VS People with guns. This will not end well. If his troops are loyal enough, I doubt that the protesters can oust him.

Also, judging by his craziness, I wouldn't be surprised if he actually showed up on the streets shooting at protesters himself.

He's too frail to walk, if anything he'll use that golf cart he drove away from his speech, and start a new kind of drive-by shooting
