Ok, so I'm stuck on dial-up for a while. I installed HL2 episode 1 but steam's making me update, which Im guessing will take days. It won't let me run it in offline mode. What do I do?

Curse the idiots that made Steam such an intrusive and unforgiving POS, and ask them why it doesn't have simple user-friendly options to stop situations like yours arising, preventing you from playing the SINGLE player game you payed good money for.

It says clearly in the system requirements that Internet connection is required. It's not their fault he's stuck on dial-up.

Exactly, Your just gonna have to wait, and Shasta, please hush =)

Steam is a bastard to dial-upers. You have to fully update a game before you can play it, even offline. I currently am updating HL2 and it's only at 5%.

Yeah I hate that. I have wanted soooo many times to bring CS:S to a friends house but then remembered the hour to two hour update that needed to happen before I could play the game!! Sucks! Basically you've got to wait it out I guess.

Yes, curse those bastards.

"The Steam client application's files must be updated to allow for the use of Offline Mode - if your game's status is "100% - Ready" but you receive the message "This game cannot be started in Offline Mode" when attempting to play offline, the Steam client application's files need to be updated."

Ass. Whatever, I just let it download all night.

Yes. Yes it does. But he can tick that box, because he HAS an internet connection. It doesn't say "you better have a fast motherfu*king connection, or a sh*tload of time to wait to play this game" on it, does it? It should.
It's not their fault he's stuck on dial-up.
No it's not. But it's not HIS fault that they FORCE him to update BEFORE he can even play a game. How hard would it be for them to get Steam to ONLY verify your key/account, and then ASK you if you would like to update now? Not hard at all. Don't give the usual "just turn off the auto-update" crap answer - we all know that immediately after install, it automatically starts updating the games BEFORE you can stop it, and then you HAVE to wait untill they are done. Why FORCE this upon people? The game works without being updated. Not perfectly, but that's what you put up with if you don't want to update. IF you had a choice that is.

Also, why can't they just cache the updates into a seperate file, and only merge them with the rest of the game AFTER they have been fully downloaded? Then people could still play while the updates are downloading, and just get a little "ready to update" message, and let the user choose when to re-start the game to complete the update process.

There are plenty of EASY ways for Steam/Valve to solve the annoying problems they have created. They are dicks for choosing to ignore them.

^^I kind of agree to a point, Steam on Dial up is simply ****ed,
Yet what was even more ****ed is when I bought hl2 I got the game of the year edition, I was then required to download almost the full game + DM + CSS + HLS.

Waiting hours to install a game in not cool at all, waiting 5 minutes to install a game (like most games) I can live with.

LOL WHO NEEDS UPDATES N PATCHES RITE :D :D :D: :D :D: D: D: D: D: D:

:|, tbh.

It seems that 56Kers look at Steam with mixed feelings. I've seen a lot of disgruntled people that say their games update incredibly slowly, and I've heard of people that have their updates done in a few hours.

Steam is a very good programme, but some more support for people on dial up would be great. A pop-up saying would you like to install updates and telling how large an update is would be fantastic, as well as being able to install 1 update at a time. HL2 has gotten many updates since release and I'm sure alot of people would rather play it straight away than wait hours and hours to play.

Most 56K users just leave their connection open at night (when it is cheaper), and close it in the morning. But I don't really know the fares for a 56K connection, how much is it there per hour?

I WAS, but I did my time. So, for what now then? Pointing out the bad parts of Steam? Get a life.

BTW: Reported for trolling.

Nobody is actually banning you/reporting you/giving you warnings. I'm just commenting on this wonderful trolling ability you have.

I've got a fine life thanks :)

As for trolling ... having a joke with one of the admins is considered trolling, ok then, good job.

Being able to play offline without being forced to update would be nice, but only if there was some way to not auto-connect and choose the 'launch offline' thingy before it attempt to connect to the Steam servers...

Well in which case i'll await my punishment for having a joke with a friend :)

I suppose I'll throw my 2 cents in here while we're here seeing as I have no internet at home and essentially bought HL2 for my singleplayer fix.
While Steam has many many advantages which I can appreciate, at the same time I can hand on heart say that it has been the worst piece of software I have ever had to use (and I use a java based accounting software at work biatches). With the inability to update and then play offline without having to do a time consuming and ridiculous work-around, Steam has effectively destroyed my ability to play HL2 at any time. If I connect to the net to play DoD or CSS or any online mod I run the substantial risk that I will not be able to play any of my steam games until the next time I connect to the internet. Or if I have my games fully updated and working offline, I cannot realistically go and play a round of DoD without risking my ability to then go home and play HL2 offline. As of this moment I cannot play any of my Steam games - HL2 will not start at all and any mods and CSS crash to the desktop upon loading. And I really really am not in the mood to drag my computer into a city centre net cafe just to update Steam knowing that even then, there is a good chance that it will still not work when I get home. It means that I cannot download a map or mod at work to play at home because it's a waste of time. Sure it works fine for 24/7 broadband users but the product also advertised offline play and does not deliver in a satisfactory manner at all. On the contrary it punishes offline users where such punitive measures are completely unnecessary. If the game is fully up to date - it should be playable end of story. However, things are never that simple with Steam.

I suppose it comes down to this - you might not have any problems but others do and you criticising them for voicing their problems could just as easily bite you in the ass when you have problems with something else and does a disservice to the whole community by silencing what are valid issues.
