Update times...

I recently installed the Orange Box and I eagerly went to play Portal. Now, it says that I have to update, so I went to start the update. It says "3 hours 17 minutes reamining"
Is it normal for it to take this long??
Do I have to update everytime I play it?
Help please. :x

yes you will need to update when there is an update.
updates come when they are needed

You've got a retail copy I assume. Since that version was made Valve have released a couple of patches and updates to Portal for it to work fully and properly. This download is all those updates since Portal was released and shouldn't take too long once downloaded (Steam will automatically install the updates for you).

Check what connection speed Steam has you set as, and make sure you set it as close as to what you have. Also, this won't happen everytime you play, once updated the games will play without any other downloads (unless Valve release future updates).

You'll find playing Episode 2 and Team Fortress 2 have a couple of updates too.

If you don't want future updates you can disable them by right clicking on the game then properties,update then set it to don't update this game.
