Are any of u experiencing long updates through steam, when i installed HL2, the updating time was only 2 hours++ but yesterday it started to reupdate but this time round, it is about 10 hours!!! :flame: and i am using a 512 Modem! i can't possibly play it while it's updating. Should i just reinstall the game?

I was also wondering if you were required to update HL2. I'm on a 56k connection and I wouldn't want to have to download a 20 MB file before I played, since it would take all night.

u r required to dl the update if ur connected to the internet but u can bypass that by disconnect ur modem cable then go to offline mode but sometimes teh update will improve the gameplay

but what about updates through a phone line? not everyone has cable yet...

Do you have a friend who also has broadband/cable and Half Life 2? If so he/she could burn the updated gcf files to a cd for you.

maybe i could ask valve for help? does offline mode work well?

Half Life 2 itself should not take all that long to update. I'm on 56k myself and the the first update after install took a couple of hourse...I think there's been one update since then and that didn't take all that long either. Almost certainly not 10 hours. Just leave it on in the background one day while you're browsing and it should sort itself out.

Although what might be happening is that one of the other games in your Steam list is updating. Set everything apart from HL2 to "always keep this updated" and see if it helps. Alternatively switch HL2 to "do not keep this updated", then turn off Steam....disconnect, run steam again and see what happens. HL2 MIGHT be at 100% again, but I'm not sure if that really would happen.

20megs taking all night?
What are you on.
I usually leave my computer on all night to dl about a 100meg file.

Are you sure your getting 56k connections?
Whats your average dl speed?
Mines at least 5.2Kb\s usually 5.4Kb\s
Any lower and something is wrong.

I'm guessing this guy has a shit ass ISP who gives him very very bad dl speeds for his 56k. I know alot of times 56kers get 28.8k speeds...which is...a horrible thing.

A friend of mine is with Virgin and never connects at more that 32,000. Not sure how it works or if his speed willincrease after the initial connection, but that's still lame. I'm with BT and pretty much can never predict whenever I'm going to be dumped offline, although they have been slightly more reliable recently. If I dl'ed something overnight, it'd be sod's law that my line would drop 20 minutes after I went to bed.

Steam would be SO much more tolerable if you could see the progress of whatever you were updating...."99%" isn't very helpful when the final 1% could be a few dozen Mb.
