So I have a bit of cash hanging around, and I'd thouht I'd combine my current comp with some new parts.

My current rig:

GPU: ATI 9600p OEM
Mobo: ASUS P4-C800e-deluxe
CPU: Intel P4 2.60c (can't remember socket--from 2003)
Ram: 2x512mb generic pc3200

All of this was from 2003. Suckiness personified.

I'm thinking of replacing with:

GPU:

Yes, it's essentially a new comp, just I'll be using the same monitor, peripherals, ram and HD. My main question is: would these new parts secure me for ~1-2 years from now? Or is dx10 going to screw me over in terms of value? And should I get some more ram to total 2gb? Comments would be very helpful.

That would be a good setup using your current ram. If you got something that used DDR2 memory then that would be adding a bit more to the price.

The main thing you want is a PCI-Express video card because DX10 gfx cards will be using that slot.

Do you think it would be smarter to buy a cheaper dx9 card now and when dx10 comes around buy a good dx10 card?

Depends how well you want to play your games now. If it was me I'd get the one you linked. That 7900gt is a great card and at a great price. You could buy a 7600 or X1600 card to save money though and they would be a lot faster than your 9600pro. They are faster than the 9800XT.

i would get the KO version of the 7900gt not the CO because the KO has a new copper cooler

That gets to my next question: I'm looking to overclock this stuff a lot. What's a good brand for fans/heatsinks? Should I be buying a new fan for every part, or are some of the oem ones reliable? I've had problems with vid card fans before.
