I normally would post in these kind of threads.....to answer. I have never asked a question like this before but here we go...

It turns out my motherboard is starting to fail. I need a new one, but i want it to be semi-future proof. Therefore I want one with a socket T interface BUT has to have AGP not pci express, as i would hate to ditch my r9600xt. I am very low on cash and my parents hate it when i upgrade. ("why? dont waste your money. You dont have enough money to keep doing this.") You probably know what im talking about. So that means i need a motherboard and a cpu (prescott i believe) The thing is, do they make any mobos that supporrt socket T and IDE? I have IDE hard drives so if it only comes with SATA, then im screwed and need to buy hard drives as well, and not to mention i dont know how to image/copy all stuff from current hard drives onto new ones.

I really need help. I currently have a 1.8ghz cpu which is starting to become obsolete.

SO Im trying to get a new mobo and cpu without having to change anything else. Which i guess also includes ram.

any suggestions?

OH i forgot to say....prescotts are only good at speeds at or above 3ghz. SO that is more $$$ i have to pay.

I didn't know they finally designated LGA 775 as Socket T.

Must be T for Terrible. ;)

Why are your current system specs? And how do you know your motherboard is failing?

current system specs: (out of emeory so it may not be complete.)

1.8ghz cpu northwood core
768mb ram
radeon 9600XT

70gb maxtor 7200rpm
40gb western digital 7200rpm

I cant remember what type of ram it is exactly. I'll lok into it.

And the prescott is NOT a terriblr core. above 3ghz it is actually good. (now im talking about the Intels with numbers right? 530, 560 etc.)

I know my mobo is failing becasue the power supply is not issuing the "power good" signal it gives to mobos before letting them boot into Bios----and then into windows etc. so it doesnt do anything when i press the on button, when i try with a different PSU it doesnt work either. That means its a mobo problem.

Yeah sounds like the mobo is dying but get an A64, cheaper and better.

It will be too expensive to get LGA775 and a new Prescott cpu, go the way of Athlon 64. I'd say a 64-bit system is future proof, wouldn't you?

AMD Athlon 64 2800+ $148

Cheap but decent socket 754 mobo:

ur sig states u have a P4. ANyways, iw ill look at that site in a moment. Do you really recomend AMD? I have been with Intel for a long long time. non FXs dont require registered Ram right?

Have you seen the new LGA 775 heatsink? I could use one to kill a man with ease and then throw it on a prescott and use it to cook a burger.

The Prescott 3.6 GHz somewhat is somewhat okay in performance, but you have heat and availability problems (as you can't find one anywhere). Anything less than a Prescott 3.6 GHz is horrible.

It would be helpful to know what speed RAM you have and how much money you are willing to spend upgrading.

What is the INtel equivelent to the AMD 64 you gave me the link of?

i think its 266...let em check. And i think im starting to go with AMD, cheap

But wait...the mobo link you gave me...

This is a low priced board and it has the basics for a nice system, but it has a lot of problems. It will not work with some ATI video cards (mine didn't work...Powercolor Radeon 9600SE). In order to get it to work I had to install an older video card and load an older BIOS version on the board. Also, for some reason I can't get the proper audio drivers to load. Throughout this process, technical support was horrible and the manual was hardly any help. My system is finally running, and it seems to be running well but getting to this point was a pain! No complaints with newegg...great service.

Bottom line: this is a cheap board. Lots of corners have been cut. Even the manual is printed on only paper like a cheap panmphlet. AND I'm having similiar problems as straw, whose review is above. It won't recognize my 9600 and I'm stuck using and old card. I would spend the money on a better board.

i have a 9600XT

but this guy got it to work:

Biult a nice AMD64 2800+, 512MB PC3200, 80gb, ATI 9600PRO. I overclocked the processor from 1.8ghz to 2.1ghz with ease. However the board limits FSB to 233 but you can get a BIOS update to let you overclock more. The board is nice and stable. However, it can't measure cpu temp but still, my chip runs cool with excellent cooling so I have no worrries. It's a great entry level board for a amd64 system with enough features to make you happy for the price. Highly recommended!
but maybe not.

woops, me dumb when it comes to RAM....here: i use PC1600

Yeah, it's pc2100 though. Of course I have pc2100 and it's fine for me, I would really go with the A64 if I were you, it's cheaper than the Prescott and LGA775 and performs great. I have a Pentium yeah it came with my Dell, I didn't choose it. Plus when I got it last year I didn't know anything. But I've had a bunch of other things I've had to upgrade and the processor wasn't really too bad. I may get a new one in the near future.

Ok thanks for ur guys' help. I have to get more money first thoguh.
