What I'm getting is a silent Asus GeForce 8600 GT 512 MB, which sounds reasonably good for it's price (DX 10 ftw), but what would I be best to upgrade next? At the moment I have 1 GB RAM and a 3.4 GHZ processor (one core though).

And is the card I'm buying a good choice?

If you have a PCIe slot, then yes it's a good choice.

telling use your full current specs would help. for example tell us your current card.

Oh and about the rest of your pc, it should be pretty good. Next time would be a complete overhaul cause nothing is really upgradable unless you buy something else with it (cpu + mobo + ram for example).

My current card is a ATI Radeon 7200 SE. I'm getting my new card for what would be 215$, and I have a PCIe slot.

How much was the price?

lol well from a 7200se that is a hell of an upgrade.

se,le cards are mainly lowend cards of that series. se is really known as sucky edition.

Holy crap! I saw one of those 7X00 cards in a laptop today. Laptop had about a 1.8 GHZ P4 processor, and the game lagged a bit in AVP, a game from 1999.

Anyway, you shouldn't go for the 8600. Go for a 8800 GTS instead. It'll be worth the extra amount of money. It's a little sad to buy the 8600 cards and realize if you spent a little more on a 8800 GTS, you would be so much better off.

Look at the rest of his specs, it aint worth it.

I would buy a new pc, but if I had to buy a card it would be Nvidia 7900 GS or some ATI 1900 pro/x.
