I know this is a question which must have been asked before, but rather than downloading > 4Gb worth of .gcf files is it possible to just burn them onto a DVD, install Steam on my new PC and copy the .gcf files over into the relevant folder?

Will Steam then automically unlock the content?

I don't want to spend days downloading the HL2 content all over again.

Thanks

I'd read somewhere that you had to delete some blob file though.

I'll give it a go when my new PC arrives this week.

Upgrading from a P3-933 with a Geforce 2 FX5200 to an Athlon 3500 with a PCI express X800 XT.

So hopefully, I'll see some performance increase!

You don't have to worry about the .blob file, just burn the GCF files only. Then when you get your new PC, download Steam, install it, then copy the GCF files to the 'SteamApps' folder.

As for performance increase.. DUH! You'll be able to run HL2 on the highest graphics settings with no slowdown on that machine.

EDIT: Steam has it's own backup feature, you might want to try that. Right-click the game you want to backup in Steam, and go to 'Backup game files'..
