Upgrading RAM

I seriously want a gig of RAM. How do upgrade from my 512 meg?
Do I have to throw away the old?
Do I just plug in a new stick of RAM in and they both run?
And other similar n00b questions that ye probably will know I'm going to ask.

Oh, and sorry if this is supposed to go in that overclocking thread. I don't know what overclocking means.

if you have 2 slots for RAM then you wont have to throw away the 512, you can just stick the same type of RAM in the second slot, but if you only have one slot (highly doubtful, but if you do) just take out the 512 and replace with the gig

So I just go on ebay and find another 512? Sounds too easy. Do they have to be compatable with eachother, compatable woth my motherboard, do I have to get new drivers etc?

you have to nake sure that they are the same type (ie. ddr) and such, to my knowledge there is no such thing as RAM drivers, and i think that all RAM is compatible with every motherboard

Another thing, RAM runs at the lowest clock speed of your combination.

Say 1 stick of 3200Mhz
and one of 3400Mhz
all would run at 3200Mhz

(think that is right kinda figures)

only if your mobo supports the clock speed, otherwise it will revert it to the speed only capable of the motherboard.

Hi, what is the make & model of your motherboard?

Tell us this & ill ahve a loom to what speed memory u can use.

To find ur mobo make & model number do this..

start, run, type dxdiag press ok. Then it will tell u it on the 1st screen.
