Upgrading Video Card, what to chose....

Their mostly the same, except the GeForce has a higher Core clock and the ATi has OpenGL 2.0 while the Geforce has 1.5. And the ATi is 256-bit while the GeForce is 128bit.

I'd probably go with the GeForce with the price.

my advice: WAIT the 2 weeks or so for ATI to release there new graphics cards, and then upgrade. You will be able to get a much better card for the same price since prices on all cards will plumet.

are you saying that new new ATI card would be priced at 179 dollars?

Between the two, I'd go with the 6600GT.

Normally they release the high end card first but ATI is releasing pretty much their whole line within a 2 months time (Sept/Oct). I don't think it will be as soon as two weeks. They should have a new card out at the 199$ price point though.

no im saying that once the new ati card is release prices on x800 line cards will drop significantly, along with the 9800 xt so money will be saved no matter what he chooses to do

Supposedly ATi pushed back the dates on those cards until Q1 06. Here is the link: http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview.aspx?catid=31&threadid=1668687&enterthread=y

Also seems that they are being sued for insider trading: http://www.snlaw.net/PDF/ATITech.pdf

Everybody always says this before high profile hardware releases, but i've yet to see it happen.

The R515 isn't the 199$ card (which was mentioned in the forum post to be delayed).
That's the X300 replacement.

The R530 is the 199$ card.
