urgent help needed with virus bombardment

hi guys. I'm running windows 2k and just got my 1mb connection hooked up. Problem is every 5 or 10 minutes my connection goes down. It's still up n running but my pc just refuses to work (ie internet explorer or fox or anything). I've noticed that there are a few things going out which are more than a bit suspicious. There's 2 or 3 diff things chatting to irc channels which obviously is no good but norton's not picking them up as viruses. Any ideas how to sort this out? what's the best program? Adaware and spybot s+d aint picking anything up

PS i'm online on a diff computer to avoid getting disconnected.

Further to this what would you recommend for free? atm i'm running norton antivirus 2k3 and sygate personal firewall
