I press the power button on my computer and the LED light comes on, and thats it. Fan doesn't start, nothing... I'm not a total hardware newbie, but I'm lost here.. please help, I recently upgraded this computer, replacing a graphics card with a 9800SE, could that be it?

Thanks in advance, like I said, this is really distressing ;(

Just out of interest and to bump up this thread for you, how are you connecting to the forums right now?

Interesting, sounds like it doesn't even start booting. Could be the PSU, IIRC the 9800 is quite power hungry. But if you've already been using the 9800 for a while that's probably not it.
And as it doesn't start booting it probably isn't BIOS related either...

Well, I'm not sure :| Maybe someone else can help

D33 has suggested on MSN that it's the PSU, and that it's died... I've been using the 9800 for over a month and had no problems. I'm removing the PSU now, and trying to replace it, could someone tell me if replacing a 300W PSU with a 230W PSU is a good/bad/really quite stupid idea?

hmm depends on the amount of components in your pc. But it''s not a very good idea imo, but I guess it will be able to show you if that was the problem. Just don't run it of that psu on a regular basis. I would suggest a 360W psu minimum.

I'll have a new PSU in a few days. There aren't many componants in this PC. Really at all :)

Depends, a 9800 on a 230 isn't a good idea I think. But if you have a low end CPU it might work. You could always try taking the CD drives and such off for a while.

I've decided not to fit it. Would be too risky tbh..

;(

Thats great, real ****ing fantastic.. the last ****ing straw.

You checked the connections on the mobo? Sounds quite odd but some of the connectors, apart from the one for the case LED, may have come off of their pins.....worth a try at least

It could be a number of things, but from what your saying it seems that power IS going through the mainboard to light up the Power LED, but not enough to power the rest of the components. Sounds to me like it's either your power supply or you've knocked something when you installed the card. Try taking out your ram and harddrive cables and re-plugging them in (make sure the computers switched off) and seeing what happens, but if that doesnt work, remove some components like cd roms and other add-ins and see if the computer then powers up. When i went and asked a salesman about the 9800 pro he said it needed it's own power connector which probably means it uses a whole heap of power. Personally i only use a P4 300W power supply with a 2.66ghz P4, soundblaster live! sound card, dvd-writer, 52X asus CD Writer, 56K Modem and hard drive and ive never had any power probs.

But hey, it's up to you. :)

Goodluck.

Oh yeah, by the way, ive heard the 'SE' 9800's arnt the best, but i could be wrong.

They are good cards :)

Anyway... I fitted the 230W and it runs fine, so no worries. It was the old PSU, I tried it another machine, still buggered :) Anyway... tis fine now :D

You should definetly upgrade that power supply at some point anyway. It's pretty well below what is recommended even for a GeForce 4.

Try to turn your PC on with out the card in the slot. It would beep at you because there is no video card present but it would at least get the fans on and see if the card is over doing your PSU or if it is dead.

BTW a 9600Pro is better than a 9800SE. Link

Ah didnt catch your last post. GJ anyway. It works.
