Hello people,
I want to ask something: I'm working on a freeware 2D adventure game. It's name is "Lost In The Dark". I'm using the Half-Life 1 engine and the maps which I made by myself for creating 3D backgorunds. The problem is that I am using the Half-Life and They Hunger textures and models. I am not sure if this is legal. I've sent an e-mail to the artist of They Hunger, but I couldn't receive a reply.
PS: The game will be completely free.

Well, as long as you ask and they say yes, it's ok. But, if you don't ask and do it anyway, you could be in deep do-do. :) Your link redirects us here. ;)

I've asked but the man who I sent e-mail haven't replied yet.(Maybe he didn't saw the message because of using ex e-mail account)

ask around on usenet or HL forums, maybe the guy is hanging around or someone who knows him is. Though if you never get a response from him it would be bad form to use them anyway. I'm sure it wouldn't hurt to redo some of your own.

You should ask Valve about using their engine in that way too, unless its a mod, you certainly can't allow people to download anything of HL1 that would have otherwise come from the game itself. ie: you can't include the engine, only the resources used on top of it that you've done, so people still need to buy the game to use it.

No, I don't use any "script" part of the HL engine. I just use the screen-shots which I got from the maps, which I made, for 2D background graphics.

Wouldn't it be easier to hire someone to paint the images? You'd not have to ask permission from anyone then, would be your game.

Without permission, you can't do it. EOD.

It's a bit lazy really :(

but he can speed up the process 2, thus makin us the happy owners of this faster.

yeah,, unless it's a mod for halflife,, you could get in all sorts of problems,,

btw: they hungers designers name is Neil Manke, maybe if you did some sort of search you can find his current email

Thing is though, if you were doing this as some kind of HL mod, it would actually be significantly more legal because then you're allowed to use Half-Life art assets.

As it stands, you need to contact someone at Valve to check out the legalities of using their art, as well as Neil Manke.
