WASHINGTON, D.C. -- National Security Advisor Steven Hadley confirms that an incident occurred 5:10 AM Local Time involving eight Islamic Republic of Iran Air force aircraft launching as many as a half dozen anti-shipping missiles at the USS JOHN C. STENNIS aircraft carrier.
It is unclear of how severe the damage, but reports indicate that at least four and no more than seven anti-ship missiles hit the hull of the ship.
When asked if a retaliatory attack was imminent, Hadley declined to comment.
However, he did note that the impact was severe and unexpected and "the casualties may be in the hundreds, including the ship itself."
"Other ships in the US Fifth Fleet were also hit," he said.
The aircraft used were Mig-29 with IRIAF markings, but the type of missile is still unknown, an AP source reveals.
Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesman Mohammad Ali Hosseini said those responsible for the airstrike "acted under Iranian supervision." He also said he held the United States responsible for forcing the strike.
