So valve said before that they rejected scripts from a lot of people for a Half-Life movie...
Of course to ensure quality of the HL series...but what about this: perhaps they want to one day write and develop the movie themselves from within valve. But, when the 3D technology is good enough, and when valve is successful beyond what they are now.

What about that? valve could be entertaining that possibility, but all we know for sure is they don't want to crappfiy the Half-Life series

But I remember hearing that valve sold rights to a movie to someone *shrugs*

I've always thought that Marc Laidlaw should script it. If he's not up to the task himself, he could it in collaboration with someone.

yeah i agree

the mistake that game movies make i think is just creative conflict, where they end up making crap for a lot of reasons

let the same person use the same vision

I think it was Crytek that sold the rights for a Far Cry movie and I seriously doubt Valve would do such a thing.

I hate every video game movie. Resident Evil was o.k., but the crappyness of AvP overrides it. I would hate to see Half Life be made into a movie, unless Valve writes it themselves.

1.) Just because somebody has the rights doesn't mean they'll make a movie. It just sorta means that they have dibs on it should they ever want to make one.

2.) The AvP wasn't based on the game, really. The game was based on the comics, but the movie itself doesn't follow the games or the comics. It has an Alien and a Predator, but that's about all the connection there is. Oh yeah, and it sucks.

Now that that's out of the way, I would think a movie would be unwise. When you turn it into a film where you can actually see the main character on the screen, then you lose a lot of what made Half-Life so great. When you give ol' Gordo a personality on the silver screen, then you'll get a lot of people saying "Whoah, he's not supposed to be like that" and "Dammit! Why hasn't he shot any scientists yet!". :)
Also, considering the quality in video game movies thus far... I don't think so.

Fanboyism aside, I'd rather see the Deus Ex movie, which sounds intriguing at this point, but I'm not aware of its status any more. A Doom movie is supposedly in the works now too.

If they do make a film I think Bill Cosby should play Eli. He'd make a good Eli.

Valve make a movie?

Oh please.. they've had ONE hit game, and no experience in making a movie. Not to mention it would be delay'd so much and countless other reasons why it would be a terrible idea.

Y'know, that Doom movie comment reminds me, there's been a Doom movie on the books for yonks now. Since just after Doom became massively popular, in fact. I hear they originally wanted Arnold Schwarzenegger to play Flynn McTaggart, but I guess that's kind of out of the question now...

Doom 3 has rekindled the Doom movie fever. Although Ahnuld is not in the running, there is plenty of speculation about who might. Latest is that The Rock was offered the job and he even commented on it as a possible future endeavour.

Last i heard, id was shopping the rights but one of the studios couldnt' get a certain amount of progress completed in a certain amount of time so the rights reverted back to id, who has since gotten another studio involved, retaining a few key members of the previous produciton group. Certainly seems like it's on track to get done, but yet another WID production.

Frankly, I don't think most Video Game Movies are that bad. I don't tend to equate them with normal movies, so my expectations are quite a bit lower. I haven't seen Resident Evil yet, so there goes one comparison. The state of special effects today can really help someone make a video game movie since most games are based on unrealistic events. Doom 3, HL/HL2, etc. Sci-fi stuff.

The problem is finding someone with enough writing talent and a director who understands the core audience (no, not 8 year olds), and the amount of intellgences most of them have, to sign on for this kind of movie. When all is done and said, Doom 3 is mostly just a Sci-fi Horror film. They were quite popular for a while. I'm not up on whos-who in film anymore. Other than Tarantino, who wouldn't make a good HL or Doom movie.

I'm still in the beggining of my HL fan movie script :p

I think Metal Gear Solid would make for an awesome movie...Kurt Russell would make an awesome solid snake. As for HL movie, sure why not as long as you have a good director and VALVe writes the script and has creative control. Hmm who would make a good Gordon? Anyone?

Or, they could save a lot of money and say "you're not supposed to see Gordon".

Okay, MGS would suck as a movie because the game is essentially a movie. With some gameplay. It's more like an interactive film.

Now, if the movie was perhaps based in another setting/time, then that would be alright since it's new material. But to retell Shadow Moses? Or the Big Shell? Far too much deja vu. And not in a good way.

Or entirely in CGI. Or with sock puppets.

Personally, I'd make a Half-Life film by switching between the situations a handful of (seperated) characters encounter- perhaps including Gordon as an apparent mute, perhaps because he never encounters someone willing to talk to him in the movie... or... something...

Reminds me of how so many Chrono Trigger fanfics have Chrono dumb. It's all about interpretation...

"Hey there er..mr. ...umm..... zombie thingy...OW! hey F**K YOU!"
*stabs crowbar in zombie

Good things to talk to them aliens and the grunts well...

Gordon: So how's it going
Grunt: Yes, Sir.
Gordon: That's not what I asked...
Grunt: Yes, Sir.
Gordon: Oh. Do you say other things sometimes?
Grunt: Yes, Sir.
Gordon: Like what?
Grunt: Yes, Sir.
Gordon: No, an example.
*grunt says something else but we don't know what because its so damn garbled. Grunt shoots in gordon's general direction and now they are both trying to kill each other....just like the one in the last room :(

Aint peace a beautiful thing? :)

Half-Life could make a good movie, but instead of following Gordon they should give some deeper insight and stuff and follow some of the scientists/security guards. Maybe you would see Gordon once, or twice but that is all. And I don't say this because the *you are Gordon* crap, but because everybody knows very well now what Gordon looks like, people don't want to see some wanna-be Gordon on screen that *Kinda* looks like him, they want somebody that DOES look EXACTLY like him :)

What? AvP isn't even out yet?! well not in the u.k anyway, If it is crap then i'm very disappointed :flame:

You could have it from the point of view of people who are assisting Gordon, who doesn't always have to be standing in the same rooms as the people assisting him...

OK remember the first Batman? Remember when Alfred of all people let Vicky in?

Movies are not made for the "fanboys". They are made BECAUSE of them. So while it might be HL it wont be the HL where we do not see Gordon, hear Gordon etc. It will be a movie to appeal to the "masses".

And the HEV suit will probably have nipples.

Perhaps they were rejecting scripts because in some ways the script content did not match up with the story line they have planned for the future of the (game) series

Plus, who the heck cares about a HL movie anyway?

the game is the standard!!!!

I think Nicholas Cage would make a good Gordon Freeman in a HL movie.

In my oppinion.. the whole alien xen invasion would suck for any movie... juch.. might be a good PC game story but for a movie. HELL NO!

Warner Brothers could be the company to buy rights for Half Life. After all, Warner Bros. have ties with softimage when they were creating The Matrix Movies, and as you know Valve bought XSI from softimage

Valve: Basic Storyline by Marc
Softimage: Purchasing of Special effects tools
ILM: The use of Special Effects
THX: Sound
Warner Bros: Direction and scripts in colloboration with Marc
