Buoyed by popularity of free Portal 2 ARG, Valve announces $60 DLC
With the Portal 2 ARG burning up video gaming forums around the world, Valve announced today that they would be releasing an add-on DLC further exploring the world of Aperture Science.
"We were so excited about the tremendous positive response to the Portal 2 ARG," said Gabe Newell, founder of Valve Software, by phone. "It was originally a side-project to get Eric Wolpaw to go away, but it quickly bloomed into a multi-studio epic at about the same time that he stole my rolodex."
"We asked ourselves, 'How can we actually make some money off of this thing?' And after it turned out that gamers won't buy hats in ARGs, we started making a traditional FPS."
"From the beginning, we knew we were going a 'very special episode' route with this sequel," admits Doug Lombardi. "All your favorites from the first game—Chell and GLaDOS—are returning along with some wacky new friends and celebrity appearances! I'm not saying that there will be a Mike Tyson cameo... but there might be a hangover, if you know what I mean. Write 'Doug Lombardi winks' after that."
Chet Faliszek joined Wolpaw to write the dialog, and said writing a sequel was a different kind of challenge. "As it turns out, thirteen-thousand lines of dialog are easy to write with my best friends 'Thesaurus' and 'Alternate Takes.' And they're even easy to justify when my thesaurus is named 'Jay Pinkerton' in HR's database. And draws his own paycheck."
Eric Wolpaw was unavailable for comment, instead staring mutely from behind a glass door and frantically gesturing at the deadlock. Portal 2 will be released April 19th on Steam and in retail outlets everywhere.
