Valve has come out and clarified that previous rumors of a "Steam Console" are false, and that they are only currently testing Big Picture Mode on their own custom rigs. Kotaku got into contact with Doug Lombardi and he had this to say.
"We're prepping the Steam Big Picture Mode UI and getting ready to ship that, so we're building boxes to test that on," Valve marketing director Doug Lombardi said, referring to a new Steam interface that will make the online gaming service easily useable for people who want to play Steam games on a PC that's connected to their TV. "We're also doing a bunch of different experiments with biometric feedback and stuff like that, which we've talked about a fair amount. "All of that is stuff that we're working on, but it's a long way from Valve shipping any sort of hardware."
Doug later goes on to talk about Big Picture mode a bit more, and discusses if there is any possibility of Valve hardware anytime soon. The full article can be read here.

How do you feel about a Steam console? Would you buy one, and if so what kind of features would it need?

Then what's at the private E3 Valve booth, Lombardi?

Thank God, the idea of a Steam console is just retarded.

Not really shocking. Hope they do make that controller though.

I'm glad, but I wonder what they'll show at e3? Probably not the big picture mode, not really the place for e3.
