In a presentation at Ubuntu Developer Summit currently going on in Denmark, Drew Bliss from Valve said that Linux is more viable than Windows 8 for gaming. Windows 8 ships with its own app store and it is moving away from an open platform model.
Some other points from the talk:
  • Steam client is running nicely on Ubuntu and many developers have approached them with good game products.
  • Cooperation with Canonical has been good.
  • Ubuntu is preferred platform as it has a large user base and good community support with a strong company like Canonical behind it.
  • Linux has everything they need: good OpenGL, pulseaudio, OpenAL and input support.
  • New Source engine games will be available for Linux.
  • No firm time frame for Steam Linux release, but soon.
  • Copy protection is up to the game publishers.
Drew announced that anyone with a Launchpad account attending UDS will be given Steam access through a beta key.

Could this be what sets Valve up to creating their own PC hardware or Console packed with steam and Linux.

Yes, it's happening gentlemen! Well, I guess it's been happening for a long time, but every time I hear new news about this I get a little more stoked.

But the thought of this, not so much...

This is all well and great, but what of past titles pre-UT3 for instance. I would be all for jettisoning my roots with Windows if I can still play titles like Kotor and even console emulators.

Way to edit it so it looked like they said something they didn't.

Drew Bliss from Valve said that Linux is becoming a more viable platform as an alternative to Windows 8

He's not saying its more viable than windows 8, he's saying its becoming a viable alternative. More games will run on Windows 8 than runs on Linux and it will be that way for years and years.

That said, the more choices the better, so keep at it Valve.
