How much would you estimate valve have made after the first 2 nights of releasing hl2 pre-order packages?

Im doing a games technology course at the moment so its just interesting to know :)

say for example 700,000 people purchased the bronze account so far you can work out roughly how much they have made over the first 2 nights. also remembering that there are 2 other more expensive accounts which many may of ordered along with the fact its only day 2, the main hl2 game isnt available yet and also that it isnt in the shops yet.

Any estimations on how many people they think have purchased a package from steam over the last 2 nights?

500.000 .. Higher or Lower?

Lower..

Many people have ATi vouchers.. And many people bought bronze.. and any people brought silver and many people brought gold.. I DONT KNOW ;D

They don't get 100 percent of the sales from steam you know. They have to share those sales with others.

Not really... Except for taxes... And their ISP... But I dont think vivendy gets too much from steam. Isnt that why they're suing eachother (yet another example of how this capitalistic system doesnt really work so well :p)?

Pretty sure Viv get none of the Steam money.

Just want to get a very rough estimate of how many sales they are actually making...

Surely for the 7pm release they would of upped their bandwidth in order to cope, and yet it still went down so surely ther emust of been alot of traffic going through it, therefore must of been alot of packages sold :D

Just be interesting to see roughly how much Valve has made from pre-ordering hl2, with still many millions to be made from when it actually hits the stores.

This is really difficult to estimate if you don't have any sort of business background, and especially without any real idea of how Valve operates their sales sector.

A typical chain-store that sells a $200 bicycle, will only profit about $8 on the sale, after all other factors have been taken into account (which includes, but is not limited to employee salaries, warehouse/storage fees, and shipping/transportation of the product [which would be bandwidth, in Valve's case]). Source of this information is from [Devore and Farnum, "Applied Statistics", 2004; Thomson Brooks/Cole publishing].

This is probably a lot lower than most of you would guess (surprised me too, when I saw the charts). So it's very difficult for most of us to even estimate.

Well there are currently 5,000 people playing CSS. Say for example (and this is probably being generous) that this is only 20% of the people who actually bought one of the packages, then that makes 25,000. So really they probably haven't made as much as you think (when you take into account that HL2 has cost Valve $60,000,000).

But hey, it's been 2 days, and a lot of people don't know about Steam. Give it a month (if HL2 is delayed that long and I bet there will be more CSS players than CS).

Ah ok thanks :) worth a try just to see how much an operation like this could bring in within such a short time.

The launch of the pre-order was rushed upon us slightly (bar the years delay :D). Id been checkin the news sites every morning for months. then one morning, BAM, source is out tonight at 7pm :D

And a big reason steam sales were not that big is because of the limited payment methods!!
