A mod should sticky this or at least make a news post. I believe the only other game to have such a high score in US PC Gamer is Alpha Centauri. Congrats to Valve and all their hard work!

:) Like where? 98 is good as **** though.

OKay cool

A new thread wasnt really necessary...

Actually, it was. The other one speculated the score. What Cliffe validated within deserved a new thread confirming it. Honestly, how many threads with 'supposed' PC Gamer scores have been posted on here recently and have turned out to be a bust? Now we have confirmation! People need to see this!

i can imagine gamespot giving halflife a 8.8 so it can just get more readers. Gamespot has the worst scores.

It does seem Gamespot goes out of their way to lower the scores compared to the other game reviews.

alpha cecntauri = win

thus HL2 = win win

Actually gamespot gives accurate scores. Doom 3 was pretty much all hype (I don't care what you say, you play it once and that's about it). So they gave it 8.5, which is what it deserved. But since it just came out, everyone was like "omg wtf, that score is teh lowz!!!oneone"

But now that time has passed more people have realized just how right they were. I'm not saying gamespot is perfect with their scores, just a bit more truthful than most sites.

All these good reviews... and having played CSS... I'd really like to get into Half-Life 2 now... ;(

Good because most mag scores are just stupid, the scale usually starts at 90%

I know what you mean, CS:S is just an appetizer :)

Same way I felt about Doom 3. I was like "wtf is with all these idiots?" Everyone was acting like it was the second coming for PC games. It was alright, and enjoyable, but just alright, imo. So yeah, you're right in that Gamespot reviews tend to leave out the additional five percentage points that typically get allocated for hype value towards other games. "I see you've got a 90% there for Half-Life 2, Johnson. Did you remember to add the hype points to that?"

Black & White, most hyped game, with the worst turnout EVER

I enjoyed Black And White, but then again i didn't wait around for it and listen to the hype. I just read that it got 90 something in PCPowerPlay and bought it

After 5 reviews i think its pretty official that HL2 is the best FPS of the year, quite easily at that

Giving low scores for the sake of giving low scores is not necessarily good reviewing. It doesn't take an Einstein to deduct 1 point from the scores magazines give and act all smart that you ignored the hype surrounding the game because you 'gave it a low score'.

Even if Gamespot is lowering their scores just to distinguish themselves from other critics, I do believe that a lot of their actual reviews coincide with the scores given to the titles. Nothing is more frustrating than reading a game review that spends about 3/4 of the time nitpicking and then you see a 8.0+ score tacked onto it. Almost as if the reviewer and the person who gave the score are two totally different individuals. Creative editing? Maybe.

Doom deserved nothing less than a 90%. And Half-Life probrably doesn't deserve a score worthy of the same as AC too. We'll see....

Oh yeah and Gamespot is aweful.

May I have some of the drugs that you're using? They must be great! :farmer:

Sure, its called decent taste in games. You can get it at walgreens.

I tend to stick with gamespot's reader review score. Much of the time its spot on :)

However, I like gamespot's low scores. I don't really trust big sites like ign that have higher scores, possibly because of marketing.

Gamespot is not reliable at all, and has a ton of questionnable reivews that look very suspect. UT2004 for example. They gave it 9.4/10 which is just plain stupid. I'd give that game a 7/10. For an online game, it's not popular and the servers are filled with bots :p

I don't see this game a 98%. It can't be almost perfect. No such game has ever wowed me. When I pick this game up with a 98% score shouldn't I walk away from the computer stunned? Absolutely shell shocked? Can that really happen?

That high of a score means it would have to change my opinion of all FPS's. I don't thinkn it's that good. I will find out but don't you guys think 98% is fricken high?

I don't want to (omg lookout) make fans of HL2 mad but 2% error!!!! no multiplayer for a FPS and it only lost 2%? A year wait, multiple delays, leaked beta, cracked CSs BETA, leaked scripts, and only 2% error?

I will have to buy this game. The hype is too much to resist. Can a game really live up to that much hype? what do you people think.

Half-Life 2 is set-out to accomplish what the original has, in-spades. When I first popped-in the original(back in 1998), I was shocked/amazed: It was the most evolved FPS the genre had ever witnessed. Not only that, the level of customizability was unbelievable. And Half-Life 2 does come with an excellent multi-player component, CS:Source. Don't down-play a game before it is released due to some minor marketing/corporate mishaps.

But NEAR PERFECT? It has to blow you away to be almost perfect. I should pee my pants to a 98%!

I think they hyped it for sale. Look'it this high score! it must be good. I can't fathom a perfect FPS. I don't think it exists. 85 % to me is about as high as a game can get. Nothing is perfect.

Well all that aside I think we might all be able to agree that Half life 2 is most likely gonna be more enjoyable than Doom 3.

IMO Doom 3 deserve any score from 80%-90% nothing higher or lower

well then sweet ... thanks for your opinion ... we will se how you react when you play it ... :bounce:

Cool. Don't get me wrong I like the game. I just hate the hype. It should be called false advertising.

I hope I do pee my pants with glee. Then the wait will be justitfied! :)

Half-Life 2/Doom III hone completely different gameplay elements...let's leave it at that.

They are 2 epic FPS. In sales and quality they are easy to compare. Whether one is better than the other can be measured in doller signs.
