How will they work?

1) Will the vehicles just be one(1) object that just gets blown up after it recieves a certain amount of damage?

2) Or will you be able to destroy certain parts of the vehicles? This would be truly awsome. A mine could blow off a wheel from the vehicle and inflict shrapnel damage on much more.. the tires, engines and other vital parts of cars could be shot up and... yeah, you get the picture..

From what I've seen in the binks it's #1 that is used, but will it be possible to make #2 work?

You can't destroy the vehicles in Half-Life 2 but I think the Source supports it.

That's probably a Good Thing. But what happens if it simply goes over the edge of a cliff? For instance in that e3 video with the rollermines when the player's pushing the buggy back onto the road with the Manipulator, if he misjudged it and pushed it over the ravine, then what? Game over?

Assumedly, if there's a bit like that where you could easily lose your buggy over the cliff, there'd have been an autosave just before it so you can load up it don't feel like walking the rest of the way. :D OR, there could be a number of buggys across the coastline in case you lose one.

Well sheesh, it's probably like the limited weapons inventory thing. They probably tried having destructable player vehicles, and then decided that it detracted from the FPS Adventure game feel, or something like that.

Just be glad HL2 actually has cool vehicles.

Put some more salt in my wounds won't you ;)

Maybe so...

Believe me I am. I just have all of these ideas in my head on how to make HL² better... for me anyway ;)

HL2 does have destructable vehicles. If you lose your buggy on the rollermines thing - you'll have to walk. The Dutch magazine PCGP had an extensive playtest at VALVe's HQ last year and they wrote that the rollermines do structural damage to the buggy, so you have to knock 'em off.

Don't we have a strider blowing up a car in one of the binks? Or is it just that you can't destroy them but they can?

i think it has been said by Gabe that in the game you won't be able to do area specific damage to the vehicles, maybe you can still blow them up with enough damage?

Anyways like somone pointed out you can always mod it if you so desire but maybe the vehicles don't play a big enough part in the game to make it worth such things. Who knows? If it isn't in there it's for a reason.

You can attach metal parts that break. One thing a hate in games is when you shoot at a car and it blows up. Most cars shouldn't blow up when you shoot them.

Really? Cool :) Can you also build a vehicle of parts that break?

I hate that too... damn annoying is what it is.

Downing a Strider by shooting off one of it's legs would be cool... but apparently not possible.

"limited" weapons inventory??
NOOOO!!!! I don't want to have to make those decisions!!
I thought that there was doors, hoods and such getting dented up,popping open, etc. in the binks,or are you saying more like doors flying off from grenade inserted in front seat..?

As I understand it, you won't have to :(

That's what I'm saying :naughty:

all the textures/models in HL2 have "hitpoints"...so every texture/model has the chance of destruction, should it take enough damage. The vehicles themselves are to be super tough...but there are supposed to be part then can be mangles or blown off.. but AFAIK, no complete destruction of cars.

What happens when a texture is destroyed? The object on which it was applied becomes grey?

a different "gib" texture gets applied. i still laugh @ wood and stuff having gibs.

Yes. It doesn't make sense to have the whole vehicle blow up when you had shooted only the wheels.

why did Gordon cross the road? :E

because there was a headcrab glaring menacingly to the right, a wall behind him, and a door blocked by rubble to the left...
:smoking:

Isn't that a "decal" getting applied upon the texture?

Edit: and why do you laugh at wood gibs? when planks are exposed to an explosion there ought to be splinters and stuff flying...

i laugh because "gibs" is short for giblets....
and yes, a decal...but valve call it a gib. easier if the last texture applied to all models has the same name, no?

With HL2 mappers will be able to attach entities to other entities. Such as a breakable window to door and the door to the car. So you can make parts of the vehicle destructible. As far as disabling the vehicle goes I'm sure you can do that with some kind of trigger. No programming would be needed for basic stuff.

nope(as in agreement with your negative statement)..it's actually quite easy to change the attribs of objects. simple change in notepad.

Yeah, well gibs shouldn't be interpreted literally in the gaming world... unless in some cooking game

ugh your all forgeting some major MAJOR facts. If all vehicles are invulnerable 1. wouldnt that make it pretty damn easy? they wouldnt be able to hit you very well. 2. uhhh what about the tank (which i think gabe said there was one) and the armored buggy (seen in bink).... then what happens to those? can blow up a armored buggy but not a PoS sheet metal dune buggy?

Edit: sorry didnt read second page ^_^

this is true... but when you find both "bloody guts" and "woodchips" in a folder named "gibs"...ya kinda tend to make that comparison. Valve call 'em gib for guts too, i think. i mean i guess wood does have guts...

I see we have been doing some snooping in the preload files... ;)

The buggy sure seems invulnerable in the Binks, but that could be because the damage from enemies has been toned down for those vids.

If that's how you feel, maybe you shouldn't use Steam :dozey:

i know what you mean...
but i want HL2 DAMMIT! lol
i only looked becasue the other preloads let you know that they were happening, and you could pause and then continue later if ya had to reboot or something. this dowload did not.

Sooo.... anybody gonna create some cool vehicles when we get the game? I would really like to see a well made controlable robot.. like the one in Aliens. That would be awesome. Or a spider tank anime-style :O

I can't wait for all the coolness :E

Don't we all... *sigh*
Personally I'm gonna get the boxed version... then I won't have to download again after formatting the harddrive, and it just feels better that way.

Huh... that's strange.. I probably would have looked too.
