when i try to play half-life 2, i leave the trainstation, go down an alley, over a fence, through a playground, down another alley, i get a 'loading' message, then it takes me back to the main menu - when i try to load a save, i get a ctd, and this error message :

engine error
too many verts for a dynamic vertex buffer (112281 x 32768) tell a programmer to up VERTEX_BUFFER_SIZE

so at the moment, i can play the first 3 or 4 minutes of the game - also, i get a lot of purple checkerboards, and black areas with coloured blotches ...

the game box said i would only need a dx 7 level graphics card, i have an inno geforce 4 mx, i get really good graphics with it in all my other games, which run on dx 8 and 9 - why wont half life 2 run???... ... ...

Mate,
I have exactly the same prob with a Geforce 4 Ti-4200. If you get a resolution please pm me. No one has answered my queries yet.

no help

prolly doesnt help but i get that in hammer after building a huge building. I have a 6800 so it could be nvidia specific?

yo serisouly when someone finds out about the vertex buffer let me kno, i have the same problem with the black dots on the ground and after i head down the alley it switches to the menu....

Its a opengl thing, it proably in some config file if not then you screwed until valve fix it internally

I am having the exact same thing. I have now spent hours pulling my hair out trying to figure out what is causing it. Hours of re-downloading cache files, uninstalling, reinstalling, nothing works. I am waiting to hear back from steam support but I am not holding my breath. BTW I have a Radeon 9250 w/ 128 MB.

i got the same chit when loading a map (nvidia 6800), but when i take the same map and run it on my bro's computer it run fine?????????? he got a ATI.

well, I put Half life 2 away, then I tried to trade it at Gamestation - because of the regsitry thing its 35 quid wasted...
Tried reistalling it recently, after 6 MONTHS!!!
still getting this error message :

Engine Error
Too many Verts for a Dynamic Vertex Buffer (112281>32768) tell a programmer to up the VERTEX-BUFFER-SIZE.

Any solutions to this yet????????????????????............................

I suppose you may need to upgrade your gfx card. Never trust minimum system requirements, usually you'll need double the minimum to play the game satisfactorily
