This is a VERY early work in progress - my first model in Softimage. I know nothing of smoothing groups yet, I'll get to that when I have to. Still needs a trigger guard, trigger, hammer, grips, details, and sights. This is just a start and is ment to be somewhat high poly compared to most out there.

Anyone have any softimage tips for me?

yup definatly needs work but its a start did yuou use boolean?

needs a little bit of work :P keep it up. better than anything I could have done anyway ..

You should avoid using booleans if you can. Modeling out the holes gives you much more control over your mesh. So far you have some issues with the volume. You should try to get your hands on the ortographic views to determine this.

Also, you'll get some problems with the triggerguard on this one I think. You might have to remodel it. You could probably save some time just extruding it out of the middle of the handle. (What's the name of this part in english?, it's not really handle, is it?)

The grip on the drawback in the front needs more space between eachother. It should also be formed as an arch where the grip starts.

And finally, get your model over the grid ;)

Definitely needs work, but it's nice to see someone specifically doing a Kimber. Such fine guns, but because of their price and extreme similarity to a Springfield/Colt 1911, they get left out all too often.

If you want/need another source pic, here's my Stainless Target II.

Update, just got a little more done.

I love 1911 style pistols, and Kimber seems to be one of the better makers of these. I have yet to actually shoot one though...

Also, this is only a half of the model... I'm going to mirror it to make it double sided, then model on the safety and mag release button, the ejecter port on the slide, etc.

Be very careful when you model mirrorwise. Make one side with only the simularity and then mirror because if you model too much, it's a pain to go back. Been there, done that... It's also a bit thin and you still haven't translated it above the grid...

hmm i dont think your following a proper modeling method .
the slide should be seperate from the body ..
it doesnt look like its box modeled ...and it looks like you just put a mesh smooth on a flat model .

Nope, they are separate. All the smoothing so far has been done with bevels or my hand. Take a look. I just took a plane and shaped it how I wanted it. Then I extruded it to give it depth and did the rest by hand.

Haven't had much time to work on it lately, the girlfriend is in town.

Heres the 90% complete model. Im going to start on something else until I trust myself enough to model some arms for the first person so I can animate it. Let me know what you think!

it's lookin OK. the lighting where the trigger guard meets the grip seems a little odd, you should tweak that a bit I think.

The grip itself looks very flat and thin. Look at the reference. The grip (the removable red wood part) curves outward, probably by about 3/16 or an inch, on each side. One side will be seen, possible quite close for reloading anim's and such, you should break that flat plane up a little, I think.

Good luck :)
