Okay, here goes: First, when a laptop is on standby, does it draw power from the battery? Second, is it better to leave your computer on 24/7 or turn it off when you don't need it? My instinct draws towards the latter, but who knows.

1) Yes, but not much.
2) Turn it off. Your computer needs to be off like you need sleep- it needs to clear the ROM and it's caches.

Turning the PC off is best. Less wear on the fans, drives etc and use less power at home. Less heat created for the air conditioning to compensate for. Capacitors probably would last longer.

Old PCs and TVs many years ago used to go bad quicker if you turned them on/off too much because they would go from no electricity to ON (like light bulbs). But that is not the case anymore. Both have a trickle of power going even when they are 'off' so that stress of turning it ON is not there.
