Video/audio stuttering in Vista

Okay, this is getting annoying as hell. Since about a few weeks ago (before that it was fine) my Vista PC has begun stuttering intermittently on certain programs for a second or so at a time. The video will freeze or slow to 1-2fps and the audio stops and starts with it like a record skipping. This can occur as frequently as once every 5 or 10 seconds or as little as once a minute, but it's very noticeable either way. Performance wise things still seem to run exactly the same besides this, and I haven't noticed any significant increase in load times or anything that would indicate the system is bogged down or something.

It seems to effect certain programs and files but not others. The main culprits are most videos and music (using Windows Media Player mostly) and even streaming videos like youtube some of the time. As far as games, it seems to vary - Sims 2 runs fine for example, whereas Audiosurf and a couple of emulators I use have very noticeable stuttering.

So far I've tried running a full system scan with Nod32, Spybot and Ad-Aware, and defragging (which took roughly 8 hours  ), none of them to any avail. I've also gone through and uninstalled any unneeded programs and cleaned up temp files and the like. The only thing I haven't tried that's been suggested to me is cleaning up the registry, but I don't know exactly how I'd go about that or what to use (also I'm good at botching that sort of thing somehow).

Any bright ideas? Here's the system specs if it'll help -

Windows Vista Home Premium (6.0, Build 6000)
Intel Core 2 Duo 3.0ghz
1gb ram (unsure of speed)
Nvidia GeForce 7600GS (dxdiag puts it at 759mb memory, but that don't sound right)
320gb hard drive with 100gb+ free space

Any help is appreciated, cheers.

Have you checked your fans? Background processes? You're not running a filesharing app at the time, are you?

try updating your video/audio drivers...

Checked background stuff, nothing appears to be using to much power. No filesharing apps. How would I check the fan? It is a little on the noisy side I guess.

try updating your video/audio drivers...
Already installed the latest Nvidia drivers (forgot to mention that, sorry). Audio is onboard, not too sure what I'd be after there.

I don't see how outdated drivers would suddenly stop working properly if they'd been fine up till recently, though.

Just open the case and look for dustbunny buildup on the graphics, cpu, and case fans, and any others you may have. You'll probably need to remove the vid card to be able to see it well enough.

Maybe you recently updated audio or video drivers and they aren't good for your setup. You could try to roll them back. Make sure you can re-install them immediately if necessary though. (keep the driver setup files in a storage folder or something) Be aware that Windows update will offer updates for onboard sound and you may have updated it. Not that updates are bad, but if it was working before...

Another thing you could try would be to lower the graphics settings of vista, for example turning off the clear window boarders to see if that is what is causing it. Oh, wait, home premium doesn't have the clear window boarders and stuff does it.

My first thought had already been mentioned - CPU is trying to do too much and so while it switches to another task temporarily, it is causing audio or video to pause briefly.

onboard sound uses CPU to process, and the more complex it is, the more cycles it will use. I think MS did away with WAV's for vista and now uses WMA for Vista. Not sure on that though. Either way... just a thought

you could check sound acceleration settings because they might be too high or low. That's under control panel.

Also, HippyChic might be on to something about the fan and dust. Perhaps your card underclocks (or just plain runs shitty) when it is too hot. If the video stutters then of course the embedded audio will stutter with it.

Well, I tried to help at least.

Hey guys.

So, I fixed it. By updating the wireless network card driver. :|

Thanks anyway though, advice much appreciated.

F*cking computers...
