Video Card Problems

I`ve had a Radeon x800 XL installed on my system for the past year and a half without problems. Recently, whenever I restart my computer, I get a blue screen and it reboots itself, only to do it all again. The only way to bypass this is to shut down completely and then restart. However now that doesn`t even work, and I was forced to reformat. At the time I didn`t know it was my video card causing the problem, but I removed it thinking it might be, and sure enough, my computer works fine. Now I hadn`t installed anything new when these problems started, it was seemingly completely random. I was able to start in safe mode with no problems, which is all that`s keeping me from writing the card of completely. Any ideas?

I got these problems when my card reset itself from me over-overclocking it. So I turned the clocks down a couple clicks, and I won't turn it up that high again (unless I get a cooler or something)

also, I got that problem when I installed a brand new wireless mouse (with a cracked receiver). It wouldn't even boot, i tried a few times. Blue Screen of Death.

I was worried, but unplugged the newly installed mouse, and it hasn't happened since.

write down the error code. mine was STOP something.. but I guess they all are, but write down the number and put it in your browser to see what comes up.

Does it do the same thing with the reformat?

Could be that the card is messing up. Or the power supply has dropped a little how much it can put out (happens over time) and the system+card is too taxing. Try it in a machine with a more powerful powersupply and make sure to connect the power plug on the end of the card if it has a spot for one. That would determine which it is.

Is the card under warranty? If it is and you think it's the card then contact them for a replacement perhaps.

If you think it just over heats and the card isn't under warranty then perhaps take the heatsink off, clean the old thermal compound off and put new stuff on (if you can can do it properly).

Or buy a new card.

Have you tried to softmod the card? By this I mean flash the cards Bios. Either as a simple update with an official Bios or in an attempt to unlock features your card might support, but are disabled via the Bios. This was quite a popular tweak done to many earlier Radeon video cards.

Also like ASUS said, make sure your card is not simply overheating. Make sure the heatsink covering the cards GPU is free of debris & make sure the fan thats over the heatsink is clean as well and spinning.

Have you tried that video card in another PC?

Making sure the power supply is not faulty is important as well. Make sure the connectors are fully connected to the back of the card.

Is the x800 an AGP or PCI-e card? Make sure the video card power connector for the PCI-e or AGP slot is plugged into the motherboard securely. (If applicable)

Does the below apply to you?

If you have an Asus Mobo, ATI recommends the following:

In some instances, when PEG Link Mode is set to a value other than Slow within the BIOS setup, users may experience system instability resulting in graphics corruption, video memory or VPU Recover errors.

ASUS has recently introduced a new BIOS feature called PEG Link Mode. This feature is available for both AMD and Intel based motherboards and allows the user to increase the engine and memory clocks on the graphics card.

The five user configurable options are:
Auto
Slow
Normal
Fast
Faster
By default the feature is set to Auto, which is the same as "Normal". However, the Normal setting still slightly overclocks the video card by almost 8%.

The PEG Link Mode value must be set to "Slow" in order to disable the overclocking feature, and allow for proper functionality. To set the PEG Link Mode to Slow, please refer to the steps below:
Enter System BIOS
Open Advanced menu -> open the Chipset menu
Locate PEG Link Mode
Change setting to Slow

Let us know how things go.

Thanks for the help! I think it might be a case of the card over-heating. When I originally took the card out I noticed it was unusually hot, but I wasn`t sure how hot it is supposed to be in the first place. Anyway, the fan is spinning, but I`ll try the rest when I get home tonight. The power supply is only about a year old, I just had it replaced, so it shouldn`t be that. If the problem keeps up I`ll post the error message I get when I restart

Okay so I got my computer up and running, and I decided to try my video card again, so I installed it, started up my computer, and got nothing. The monitor was receiving a signal, but it stayed black, with the power light flashing like it would if the system was off. So I said **** it and decided to just stick with the onboard video, but the same thing happens now when I connect the monitor to that. Is there any way to maybe reset my onboard video? Or something?

Maybe someone could point me to a forum or site where I could get some help? This is frustrating the hell out of me

Seeing how you've got 1120 posts, I'm shocked you still can't find the edit button.

I`m shocked that people can be such dicks
Honestly, is it really such a problem to scroll through a few posts? Are you seriously willing to make a post specifically just to point out the fact that I made a few posts in a row? Shouldn`t making pointless posts such as that one be looked upon as more of a problem?
You, my friend, are a C U N T. (check it out, I edited it to read what I intended! Wooooow, this edit button really does work wonders)

ANYWAY.
My friend suggested I remove the battery on the motherboard and that will reset the BIOS. I actually feel a little silly that I didn`t think of that myself. But I guess it could be worse, I could be randomly chastising people about making too many posts.

it's not the scrolling, its the aspect of the application, I'm glad you learned something. I was expecting a flame for teaching anyhow so you're welcome.

So it`s wrong that I don`t take advantage of an "aspect of the application" that you deem too important not to use? Seriously? Is that really your point?

No, its just that it makes the person seem a whole lot more organized, that's the whole point of having it. You don't have to use it, I pointed it out in case you never knew what it was for. I can understand maybe one mistake double post or maybe if you you're updating after a very long time, but 4 posts...

Fikin lol.
And not to mention the space he may have save for the ever-nonprofit HL2.net; if he had used the "Edit" option which conviniently sits there for him to take advantage of.

Are you guys serious? Wow. It has nothing to do with being organized, this is a bloody message board. If anything, separating my individual thoughts into these separate posts is more organized than loading a post with constant edits. How about this: you guys post your way, I post mine. And listen, I would have gladly taken your suggestion into consideration had you not sounded like such a douche.
For future reference, you guys should really reconsider your stances as the board`s edit vigilantes and maybe try contributing some worthwhile posts to some conversations

Aaaaaaaaanyway... battery removed, replaced, computer fixed, la di da

Yes, your posting says a lot about your personalities, which in this case; pretty much underlines your thin-skin and your slub like, unorganized lifestyle.

How about this: you guys post your way, I post mine.

Nah, you'll post exactly how HL2.net staff and owners would want you to post.

:stare:

First off, i'm glad that your problem has been fixed IonizeMyAtoms. It is very frustrating having a computer problem.

Secondly, I'm sad to see that some people here have nothing better to do, than to bad mouth someone asking for help. I remember the same thing happening to me when I first joined these forums. That being said, I would like to make it clear that everyone here is more than free to PM me if they ever have ANY questions or concerns when it comes to anything to do with computer hardware. While i'm as far from being an expert as I am from walking on the moon, i'll do whatever I can to help those that need it. I could care less if you PM me 50 times about the same thing, i'll not be judgemental or make you feel dumb. As long as in the end, you understand & the problem has been fixed, thats all I care about.

As I like to quote myself:
"There is never a dumb question. Only Knowledge."

The thing is he didn't just join, and I technically did help him by pointing out something quite helpful indeed (Even if my first post was a bit smug).
