Video card woes (new question)

Earlier this afternoon I was on the internet and my screen froze, except for when I moved the mouse i would see a small square that would only move horizontally and change colors. I reset my computer and when it booted up I got a brown screen. So I turned it off and took off the case and saw the the led on my video card fan was not lit up like it always is and the fan was not working at all.(I have a 9800pro AIW with Vantec IceberQ 4 fan)
I unplugged the fan and connected it to a different cable but that didn't work, all I got was a nice burn on my finger for just barely touching it.
It also smells like something was burning a little.
I hope my card isn't toast. Is there any safe way to check without risking more damage to it?

I do have a second video card in there but it's a piece of junk and I would rather not get a replacement because I'm going to be upgrading later this year anyways.

I think you'll have to settle for the 2nd card, or get a new one.

A 9800 can't be anything expensive these days anyways.. You could probably pick one up for next to nothing.

Does the computer beep at all when you turn it on? If other parts in the PC turn on but the gfx card fan doesn't start then maybe you could just get a replacement cooler. Without a working cooler the GFX card will overheat in seconds so you won't be able to test if its bad or not.

Well, I tried booting it up again and the fan started working again and the card doesn't seem to have been damaged. I started GW to see if there would be any artifacting and there wasn't.
I'm just really confused now about what happened to it earlier, because the fan definately stopped working then.

I know it wouldn't cost that much to replace, but I really don't want to put more money into this computer as it's about 4 years old now.
