Video card woes

I got an ATi 9800 Pro 128 MB about 6 months ago, but recently when I play games, the game freezes and a VPU Recover error message comes up. I went to turn off VPU Recover, but when I do, the computer itself freezes. ATi suggests changing the drivers, but I don't know if HL2 or anything will work with the really old 3.10 drivers. This problem happens with every game, including ATi optimized games such as HL2, Pirates, Roller Coaster Tycoon, etc. At the moment I have the 4.12 drivers. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Well it shouldn't be the drivers, 4.12 is what you should be using for HL2. The card may be overheating or something, could be the fan isn't on the card right or just isn't working properly.

That's funny because the fan on my video card before this stopped working too. It actually started to melt. Could it be my motherboard?

maybe the melting could be the problem...
