Playing DoD:S made me realize I need a new video card. I currently have a 9800 128 meg non-pro, 768 megs of ram and 3000+ 64 bit processor. I wish to run DoD:S at 1024-768 with 2XAA (4XAA would be nice) and all settings on high. What do i need?

I have one of those cards and the game run well.. But I run it without AA.

X800XL

I have one and I can run at 1280x1024 2xAA 6xAF and HDR with no slowdowns. At about $250, I would say that it is the best bang for the buck out there right now.

x800 Pro does it for me, 1280x1024, high everything, HDR, 6x/16x works like a charm :)

im runing an x850xt, Abit AN8 Fatality, 1 gig ram, 3700 AMD 64,

can run it all flat out full aa and so on at a resolution of 1024x768.

looks good too :)

wrong. you can only run Bloom not FULL HDR.

Get the 6800gt or 7800gt. Shader Model 3.0 is required to run HDR Full, Only thr 6600gt, 6800 and 7800 currently have this, no ati card.s

So its between the the X800XL and the 6800 GT. Uhhhhh, which is gonna give me more frames, goodies, etc? Looks like the X800XL is cheaper by a few bucks. Which card is better for OC'ing and which card will run games better outside of Source?

9800 PRO 256
AMD 3000+
512MB Ram

1280x1024 2x AA runs great. I'm going to try bumping up the settings a little.

I'm running it at 1600x1200, 2xFSAA, 8xAF & everything at Maxium, Full HDR. With a X800XT It's VERY smooth on a 32 players map. Sometime my FPS drop to ~30 in heavy firefights with HDR all around the place. However 90% of the time it's smooth as butter.

The game is gorgeous

No, YOU are wrong. This is not Far Cry. Valve used a different method for HDR than Crytech. SM 3.0 is not required. I have an X800XL and I have full HDR.

valve found a way to use hdr with aa

don't get the 6800gt, the 7800GT is fairly close in price but way better than the 6800... so get the 7800GT, and if you're rich get the 7800GTX

Read his first post, is he likely to have a pci-e slot when his current graphics card is a 9800 ?

I would definitely recommend the 6800GT, works like a dream with dod:s, overclocks well, runs hdr beatifully. The X800XL is also a very good card, but presently i would favour the 6800GT, but it's up to you mate. I wouldn't bother splashing out on a 6800 ultra or any of the X800XT's or X850XT's, not enough more fps for the money imo (i know, i have a 6800 ultra which replaced a fried 6800GT (my own doing) and the difference in fps is not worth the 100 odd quid that you pay for the priviledge)

I have a Gecube ATI RAdeon X850XT Platinum uniwise editon gfx card & it runs DOD on absolute top whack smoothly. Looks gorgeous!!!

Im using a X700 256mb / 1 gb ram / P4 2.6ghz comp...
But I don't have DoD:S because Valve decided to deprive people like me of having fun.

Looks like beers all around at my house when my new pc parts come in at end of week (See sig), *crosses fingers for 1600 x 1200 all to the "Explode the pc" Max* Althought the pc wont explode :-p

Wow, all these useful replies to somebody asking for our help..........

Zomg my computer is amazing, it owns, omg i'm so happy..... i'm sorry, what was the question..... (sarcasm)

I'm still going with 6800GT, imo the only other card worth getting for agp would be the X800XL, any of the ultras or XT's are not worth the money imo (again, with hindsight i would have got another 6800GT), but i'm going with 6800GT because 1. it's my personal preference, and 2. It has the latest features such as shader model 3.

3ssence spot on.

Uriel do yourself and don't listen to people spinning bs to you and just listen to me. Anyone who says they can run DOD on maximum settings with full HDR with no slowdown is a classic example of an idiot trying to make himself look better by making everyone think he has a super computer. At the moment i have a 7800gtx overclocked and i run the game on full settings @ 1280*1024 4aa/8af with my refresh set to 60 with vsync on and the game drops below 60 on the big open areas or during hectic gun fights so if a game drops below 60fps i consider it slowdown as there is a noticeable drop in frames so if you want the best performance for your money then i would go for either a 6800 ultra or a 7800gt if you can stretch that far but bear in mind that you will not get perfect performance and be prepared to hit as low as 40 frames with HDR on and thats a fact, anyone you claims not to drop that low is a lier.

Longest. Sentance. Ever.

Did you spell liar wrong on purpose?

As for which card to get, just GO WITH A 6800GT.

well i have a 9800 pro 128 meg card, a gig of ram, a P4 3.2 Ghz,no AA (trilinear filtering) 1024*768, everything else on high, HDR on high.

I get about 40-70 Fps, runs nice an smooth for me, i don't notice any slowdown.

I'd get the evga 7800GT
It's not that expensive :) the GTX however is a wallet breaker but the 7800GT was only like $450 canadian when I got it

Given his current card: 9800, he won't have pci-e, so the 7800 series would be useless

But the 7800 GT is sooooo goooooood. This is the one I'm getting, mmh.. so awesome... so powerful... *drool*

But if you must go with an AGP card... the 6800 Ultra would probably do you good.

I've got a softmodded 9500.. I play at ~15 FPS.. Works though, so I'm not complaining too much.
You'd be suprised at how good it looks even at low settings

No, if he's going to upgarde, go for the 6800GT AGP, not the ultra, it's just too much of a price boost from GT to ultra, go for the GT then overclock it with someones help hopefully, to ultra speeds.

I got radeon 9800xt and it runs dod:s without promlems
if u want a card that u dont have to update in few years go for 7800 or new radeon x1000 series if you just want ok card that runs dod:s & hl2 good you can buy older (still great cards with not so much performance differents to the new 1s) for fair price

Im running on an X850XT PE on 1280 x 1024 at 6x AA and 16x AF everything on high with no trouble at all.

6800gt 128mb agp runs it perfectly (1024x768, highest settings; lowest fps is 40, and that needs to be a very demanding spot), and will on your pc if you get this card.
