Video compression software

Does anyone know of any free, simple avi compression/conversion software? I'm trying to reduce the size on a couple of 200-300 MB videos to upload to youtube or facebook. I don't need to edit or anything fancy, just make 'em smaller.

I tried out a couple of programs I found via google but when I tried to load the avi files, nothing happened (although it was able to load some other avi files I tested). Also, Windows Movie Maker says I need to download a codec for avi, so I can't use that unless someone knows of a good codec for that?

For codecs to compress, just download the Divx drivers.

Thanks, that worked great! Turns out the original avi files already had xvid compression so I also needed the xvid codec or something.
