Video Settings wont apply!!!

I have a problem I am trying to crank up the settings for HL-2 but the seem to apply because the screen turns black but it doesnt show because im trying to apply AA X6 and I still see the same jagged lines with no AA. I can do it on CS:S tho. Any help plz!!
System specs
Intel C2D e6400 @ 2.13
2GB DDR2 667Mhz
eVGA 320mb 8800GTS (600/950Mhz)
Windows Vista Home premium 32-bit

Source has a lot of problems with Vista. So it's either that or the card drivers.

Yeah it sucks I cant even put shadows on, but CS:S works. I have the latest drivers for the 8800GTS the 158.18. Weird any fixes?

6x AA only works on ATI cards.
use 4x AA its more then enough anyways.

Gonna get all that hardware, and no high resolutions?

Don't need AA at 1680x1050 (well, maybe...) or 1920x1200...

I have a simalar problem, but not been frustrated from it recently.
But still, my graphics card is still sucky.
I change my settings in the 'advanced' option of the 'video' tab, I click 'Apply' and my screen freezes =[
