I tried getting the beta of Vista and have a problem. After downloading it, it shows it as a winrar file but it says .iso at the end. So i burned it to a dvd thinking it might work, but end up just have the winrar file. All that it has is a readme file, no installation file.

I attatched a pic

I think you have a corrupt download. Might have to re-download it. This happened to me, but i can't be arsed to download it again :)

It wont let me download it again...bastards

That is because your winRAR is set to associate .ISO files. You are perfectly fine. I opened mine with winRAR and it has only the text file. If you have burnt it to a DVD, then everything should be ready to go. Just restart the computer with the DVD in the drive then make sure you boot from the DVD.

To put it simply, your file is perfectly fine.

By the way, I burnt mine to a DVD and installed Vista already.

oh ok, good....

next question.......will i lose everything?

I don't know. I put mine on a new partition. I wouldn't recommend installing it as your main OS just yet. There are still plenty of bugs and kinks that need worked out. If I recall though, you can transport all your files to Vista if you are installing it over XP or the partition that has your main OS on.

Do you have a different harddrive that you could install it to other than your Win XP harddrive? It's best to put it on a different partition at least.

I would not recommend 'upgrading' to vista, meaning it upgrades your XP to Vista and XP won't be there anymore.

Cant seem to boot from the dvd.....and i tried switching to boot disk in Nero but tells me It is too large.......I remember installing XP and not having to do anything except restart my pc

Oh, glad i forgot to delete that "empty" .rar. Thanks :P
Would i just burn it to a dvd, or do i extract then burn the folder to a dvd?

you have to burn an iso. not just burn it to a dvd. use a program called deepburner it works well

Yeah, you don't just want to burn the ISO file on a dvd. Otherwise when you look at the DVD you will just see the file. I use nero myself. Just import/open the image file and burn.

Usually you look for an option to Burn the image to disc or copy image to disc.

ok, i got it to work, but how do i create a partition, it wont let me in setup and im not sure how to do it in computer management or whatever it is......it tells me to right click in an area of unallocated spce, but i only have my main partition which includes my entire hard drive.......

EDIT: Ok, figured it out....you cant create a primary partition with some software, either Partition Magic ($49) or a free program called Gpart. Heres the article : http://www.lifehacker.com/software/...-boot-windows-xp-and-windows-vista-179906.php

Here is the link to the free DL
http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=115843&package_id=173828

alot of the mirrors dont work, be patient.

Ill post if i have a prob.

If I tried to install vista on a partition I just know I'd **** my computer up in the first 2 minutes. Anyone else feel the same?

how would it ruin your computer????? it will not conflict with your winxp partition

ya, its confusing, i might use partition magic.....

i just dont want to use vista as a primary with all the crap that is wrong with it or will be wrong with it if I ever get it up and running......blah

Theres no ISO/Image file in my rar :/
Question: Is there a .TXT file in the RAR?
If so, then that RAR is the ISO.

I felt the same. The first time I tried to partition it I was impatient as hell and ended up ****ing up my computer. I restarted when I thought it was frozen instead of letting it go. Though, I figured out that I could have fixed it, but I did not look for a solution and panicked.

I have since partitioned it three times and moved my main partition to the other side of the HDD.

If you use partition magic, it is the easiest thing in the world. You click on your main partition and resize it to however much you want. It will have a panel of actions it will perform. Once you restart your computer, it will go about partitioning which can take a while but have patience. Then, it will boot into Windows and will say it found a new HDD. Easy as that.

Try it. If it ****s up your computer, I will give you three dollars.

i just installed vista and its sweet. Used partition magic, extremely simple. Only bad thing is you dont have any drivers once u are in vista, but the good thing about having a partition is that you can switch to xp and vista.

It has no troubles at all. I installed mine on the Nforce4 Chipset. Amazingly easy.

How long did you wait exactly? Takes awhile to get to the next screen after first reboot.

Then you have a problem. No idea though better off asking around in an MS forum.

Yeah there is.
Right, thanks :) Didn't know a .rar could be an .iso too :)
Cheers.

winrar thinks its cool and assumes its a .rar

Winrar can open .isos in this case all it sees is a readme file though.
