ok, im looking for a quick answer here, a mate wants a new pc and im putting a list together for him.
so, would he be better off with

Corsair 1GB DDR Value Select PC2700 Kit (2x512MB) (MY-045-CS)

or

Corsair 512MB DDR XMS2700C2PT Platinum CAS2 (MY-005-CS)

the second one is a little cheaper and has alot better timings, would this help the speed overall, all he wants to use his pc for is music, internet, msn stuff and some occassional gaming (probably farcry )

so which one should it be???? thanks in advance

If you're not overclocking you'll do fine even with ram that's unbranded. Corsairs ram is mainly aimed for overclockers.

should be something like an AthlonXP 2500+ with an Abit nf7-s rev 2.0. what i really want to know, is would he be better off with 512mb of faster ram, or 1gig of slower ram?

Well since that mobo has dual channel, i'd say the 2x 512mb is better.

ok, better than 2x256?
o well, ill go for the cheaper ones cos he probably wont notice the differnce in what he does, thanks for the help everyone.

Well nowadays i'd almost recommend a gig over 512, I sometimes notice that my hd is in heavy use emptying the virtual memory after playing some games for a long time.

Corsair makes all kinds of ram from value to XMS to XMS that are aimed at OCers.
Corsair memory itself is bought by people who want stability and performance. Something other memory may not do as well at.

then there are memory timings. if you truly want the most speed out of your system as possible, the higher quality ram will let you use tighter timings. 2-2-2-5 for example is very good, although with generic ram, you probably wouldn't be able to have as fast timings as those. so even if you are not an overclocker, you can get the high quality ram and benefit. i personally dont think its that big of a performance gain though, but some people swear by it.

If I put the dual channel memory from my old computer into a socket 754 will it run fine or will it have some problems? I know socket 754 doesnt support dual channel but i should still be able to use the computer in single channel right?
