VMT and VTF

How can I open these file formats to view their contents? I am curious and lurking around the GCF files and wanting to look at the textures and see exactly how detailed they are, and possibly edit them. Are these just 'locked' files, or what? I searched Google with no relevant returns.

They are the new file formats for HL2. You're going to have to wait for the editing tools to be released.

The VMTs are just text files. Use notepad.

The images in the VTFs can be extracted by one of the tools (specifically, vtf2tga.exe) used to make/edit sprays before the import option was added to the CS:S beta. There's even a GUI for it floating around the web.

Yes, but they were already available in several other threads (and have been for quite some time)... so one more isn't going to kill anyone.

It was a program written by Valve and was part of the stolen build. Of course it's illegal. Just because it's not written as a Windows app doesn't actually change anything.

There is a prgram not made by Valve 9so legal) called GCFScape that can explore the GCF files present in the Steam install. If you go to www.************* and search the foprums for GCFScape you should find it.

As far as how to work with the VTF and VMF you have to find that out yourself (hint use same link or that posted zip file)
