just a quick question... my motherboard manual says i cant have more than 3.3volts going thru my agp slot...

and i was just wondering how many volts does a 5900 pull...

not the ultra just the 5900

any answers would be greatly appreciated (also does it require a secondary power source? e.g. one you plug into a cd drive or hddsk)

anyone?

cos ill be damned if i can find what voltage the card pulls...

TheRook

p.s i personally dont think it will pull more than 3.3 but ya never know...

i havent bought it yet!

if i had i would know if it works or not :p

thanks for ur suggestion tho

therook :)

Couldn't it be found on the internet somewhere, like wouldn't nvidia have it on their site?

Don't buy the 5900 get a 9800 pro instead its a much better card.

um...im not sure but doesnt a 5900 use an external connection to you pwer supply?

Thats where most of the juice would come from.

thats what i was thinking 2 crabcakes...

i guess it should be ok!

i dont want a radeon 9800 pro...

i want a 5900 the radeon's a great card... but the 5900 only scores what 5-10fps less? and i can get it 100£ cheaper than the 9800pro too!

Gabe's answer:
quote:

I have been a long-time NVIDIA card user. Currently I have ATI 9800 Pro's
in both my work and home machines.

The DX9 performance described by the Beyond3D article is consistent with
what we've been seeing.

Wow it never fails. Anytime someone mentions an Nvidia card you're guaranteed to see several posts from fanATIcs saying, "get a 9800 Pro its better". I find it hilarious that everyone is jumping on the ATI bandwagon just because of what Gabe Newell says. It should clearly be obvious that all ATI is doing is spending a lot of money to have someone like Gabe endorsing their product. So far theres absolutely no facts that show the 9800 Pro performing better than a 5900 Ultra in HL2. It seems that ATI's marketing and advertising strategy's have certainly worked on many people.

JB, I usally argure on nVidia's side the ATI vs nVidia arguements, but you are jsut plain wrong.

Gabe was not "bought" by ATi

The part about absoultly no facts?
Half Life 2 is a DirectX 9 game, with everyhting turned on. The 5900u has consitantly lost to the 9800pro in directX9 tests. If you have hl2 running in lower modes, like it would for a card that didn't support dx9, the 5900u would prberly pull head.

Only one question: Why worry? All mobos can supply the AGP port with enough voltage. The only thing needed is a PSU that can supply enough amperes and wattage. The 5900 and 9700/9800 takes pretty much I beleive, around 70W if I'm not mistaken (I could be, it was like 6 months ago I checked it for the 9700 Pro). Dont know about the amps though, depends on what other things are on the 3.3v rail.

look at that gunmetal is a direct x 9 game...

so um... for the 9800pro beating the 5900 its finding it hard beating the 5900ultra and hte 5800 ultra and only the 256 meg 9800pro can just beat the 128 5900... so um... :p

A) Tomshardware is not a good source for fair reviews
B) Gunmetal is not DX9. Its DX8 with ONE DX9 shader if I'm not mistaken.

bah so it uses at least some dx9 stuff...

why is tomshardware unfair?

if you want to see unfair ive seen reviews where they compare nvidia and ati products and even if the radeons score lower they are still placed higher up on the results where you would expect to see the ones with the highest fps... but they dont the ATI ones are still at the top even if they score less.

which is a way of getting people to go ooooo lok ati are above nvidia... thats means there better...

that is an unfair way of displaying results!

Never seen a review that shows what you said. And I personally dont want to drag up all the 10-20 or so reviews where the 9800 wins. And I wont even comment on the Tomb Raider test at Beyond3d, THAT is DX9 :)

The thing you are ignoring here (and Tomshardware) is that the 9800 IS winning. Even if it has lower fps in the graphs. Why? You dont see screens. If you would, you would see the VAAAAST superiority of the 9800 over the 5900... 4xFSAA on Nvidia looks like shit. 4xFSAA on ATI looks like 8xFSAA on Nvidia (no, 4xFSAA on ATI is actually better). End result: Unfair test. If they did a complete image VS image comparison, ATI would win in fps...

Edit: http://www.tomshardware.com/graphic/20030306/images/iq-fsaa-1.bmp
4x on ATI is nearly 8xS on Nvidia. Redo the test with 8xS on Nvidia in that review, guess who the winner will be?

im not denying teh 9800 is a top quality card!

its just that either play it at 1600x1200 and you honestly dont need AA (much)

but if you play it at lower resolutions 1024x768... you can turn on hte AA and still get great fps...

both cards are good!!

Geforce4 Mx440 BAAAAD!!
(my present card)

current 3dmark03 score.... around about 300-400
3dmark score with 5900 around 5000

now if that isnt a huge jump (even though benchmarks are worthless to be honest)

real gameplay is where its at...

and to the person who said the 5900 wouldnt run hl2 without turning the settings down you must be brainwashed because i will guarantee ill be able to run it at max settings at 1280x960... NO PROBLEMS!

TheRook

i intend to run at 1280x1024 with 4xfsaa and 8xaf :D

and at 60fps, at least.

Check out http://www.beyond3d.com/misc/traod_dx9perf/index.php?p=5

You must have noticed it? And that is the with the 9800 running PS 2.0 (FX disables it by default), 32 bits textures on reflections (FX run with 16 bits), 6 or 12 (9700 or 9800) projected shadows (FX does 1), PS 2.0 in DOF (FX doesnt do it), 3 cubemaps (FX does one), etc etc...
And guess what? The 9800 outperforms it.

Will you be able to run at max settings in HL2 then? Possibly. CAN you run at max settings? Not if Nvidia drivers have anything to say about it :p
