I think I found a way to recover your entire friends list. go to C:\Program Files\Steam\config and there should be file(s) called userdata_<numbers>.vdf. One of them should contain your old friends list, and another one (if there is one) is your new (or empty) list. Rename the larger file to your smaller file (back up the smaller one of course). Now open steam and open friends, and they all should be there. This has been tested by Shuzer.

I'm pretty sure my situation is pretty unique.

Most people prolly have not gotten a totally new machine or formatted their hard drive or deleted Steam or but a cat inside their case to see what it would do within the past week.

So, yeah, most people should have two!

I'm fairly sure VALVe changed the way Friends operates.. such is why there's a new file/#

This fix, while appearing to work, does not work.


I tested it with a friend (HI CYBIE) who followed the same steps. We both had eachother on eachother's old, dead lists. His list was restored, and so is mine, but we couldn't see eachother online.


Feel free to restore the original file. The old names that are (seemingly) lost forever will be gone, and your new, clean list will be there as it's been edited tonight.

Ok, there is some big downside to this. You won't be able to see your friends (if you manage to get it to work) online unless they have their profile names as they were before the crash.

Edit, or what Shuzer said. Oh well, at least we ALMOST got it to work.
