I?ve been hearing your concerns about the DRM situation and wanted to get back to you with some information about our plans. In the case of Red Alert 3 (and all PC titles coming out of EA), we will use SecuROM ? the same copy protection that the EALA RTS group has used on our last three titles. This time around, however, the copy protection will be configured to be more lenient than we've supported in the past.

bye bye crysis warhead and mirror's edge, my gaming heart has been broken :(

EALA? I don't remember having any copy protection stuff in C&C3.

It's very likely that every game from EA will have this kind of DRM, no big surprise.

EALA? I don't remember having any copy protection stuff in C&C3.

I may be wrong but I think that C&C3 too has SecuROM as DRM.

I think cnc 3 and kane's wrath still used securom just not the version that has online activation and limited installs.

I've got to say many people I know get angry over things in the video game industry whereas I believe I am quite a tolerant person. However I refuse to give EA my money for a game that I can't guaranteed will:
A) work properly (their login servers are bad enough and they want to authorise everyones login on install?)
B)be supported in years to come (after all EA are known for dropping services so if I get spore in 5 years time i might not be able to reclaim installs)
C)reclaim my installs on a "case by case basis" (this ticks me off the most, if I run out of installs I then have to phone up EA INTERNATIONALLY for crying out loud and then beg them to give me more installs. Case by case howevers implies you might not always be successful though)

Call me naive but I never listened to the people who said bad things about EA and I actually thought they were having good turn arounds in terms of better games coming out but as long as this **** is on their games I will never buy another EA PC game again. IMO this is worse than starforce, at least I know my copy of chaos theory will still work 5 years down the line :flame: Sorry I felt the need to rant. *phew*

I hate DRM and I am with you, but Starforce is an unparalleled evil: it really screwed my dvd burner. SecuROM never did harm to my system and the installation limit will be surely removed in a year, so future replayability is guaranteed.
But yes, this DRM thing is really, really, really annoying and I fear that the pc gaming industry is trying to get us accustomed to it 'cause a lot of big games will have it (Dragon Age anyone?)
Very sad.

The problem is there really is no guarantee to having the limits removed like bioshock did. And yeah I also lost a dvd drive to starforce :flame:

EDIT: also the other thing i forgot to mention that really grind my gears, their seems to be no connectivity between any of these methods. Bioshock has no limits any more but used to have 5 simultaneous installs meaning when you uninstalled it you got on back but before that it used to have 2 installs and that's it. Spore has 3 installs and that's it (I think i'm not exactly sure, if anyone knows please tell me) but RA3 has 5 simultaneous installs again. Ah my head is spinning.

Yeah, I pretty much stopped liking video games because of ridiculous copy protection schemes.

I love games, but it's not worth the hassle to me. I don't jump through hoops for anyone, and sure as hell won't do it when I'm the customer.

They need to spend more time and money investing in a copy protection technology that is invisible, harmless, and free of restrictions.

I have a problem with online activations and limited activations. I really don't like having the disc in the drive to play the game, but I could put up with it if they get rid of the other problems.

wait my mistake RA3 has infinite uninstall/reinstalls provided it is the exact same pc as soon as you change something like the ram you lose a credit. See how ****ing complicated this?

They can take their watchdog software and their credits, and shove them up their ass.

EA are experts at pissing off hardcore gamers.

Too right. Mirror's edge was the game I was looking forward to the most. I will naively hold out hope but when i see the inevitable post on kotaku about mirror's edge i'll probably die a little inside :(

EDIT: just realised rage is going to be published by ea as well. Will that also be a victim? :(

just emailed the editor of kotaku to try and contact ea on this matter. if you can't already tell for me this is serious now :P

And the Gamers looked up at the Heavens and spoke thus to the Gaming God (GG), "Behold, GG, the time of DRM is upon us just as your Prophet foretold. But please forgive our weakness as we cannot go on with the Burden it brings us"

And GG responded, "Be still my children for the time of unintrusive DRM is upon you. A DRM of Unlimited Reinstalls across Unlimited Computers which only grows more glorious with age."

The Gamers were delighted, "Oh GG that sounds most wondrous. When shall we receive your most generous gifts?"

And GG answered, "You will know when He brings to you the Sign."

And there was much rejoicing

Okay I've now emailed various people and caused a fuss on ea's forums. This will light a fire under their backside. Muahaha!

I had a tought. If Valve became a proper publisher (ie, financing devs) would it be a good or bad thing? Would it encourage Steam as a delievery platform and allow devs more freedom than most current devs, or would it cause Valve to have to become much more business-focused and corrupt one of the best developers in the industry?

I don't think it would ever happen though cos valve have always been proud of being independent and their business model as a result of this.

You know, I am a peaceful and tolerant man (read my previous posts about DRM). I usually do not rant and try to understand every position. In boycotts I don't believe but maybe the time has come to speak a little louder. The reviewers of Spore on Amazon have done an outstanding job in making some noise (they have to keep the thing more polite, imo, and Spore is bad with or without SecuROM). I still think that we DRM haters are a minority that will not be able to cause a change in EA's course, but one cannot keep his mouth shut forever.

SecuROM is atrocious. If I ever buy any other EA games that I positively MUST HAVE (and I can't think of any right off), then I will find a crack for it and remove it from my paid-for version. There's no reason why I should have to be punished for buying their game.

The principle should be: don't like -> don't buy -> don't steal. In a perfect world ;-)

Yeah, but in the real world we have two options.

Like it -> buy it -> get ****ed by drm
Like it -> download it -> enjoy it without a hitch

I say we should reinstate out "FU*CK YOU EA" Signatures. Whos with me?

Dude, they already do it to themselves. Wasn't the EA logo for C&C also the Nod logo? Isn't the EA Logo for RA3 the Soviet logo?

A popular copy protection system that has been getting a lot of flack recently for it's silly online activation and limited install schemes.

What's the point of doing that? Legit owners suffer, those who pirate don't give a shit, cause no system is uncrackable.
