Hello,

I've beaten Half life 2 and I would like to try and make my own maps. I'm new to the world of map makeing. The last time I've done any thing that deals with makeing your own maps was when "Duke Nukem 3D" came out. So I've been looking around for free toturials and books online.

Any one have any advice?

Also I notice there going to release this book soon on Half life 2 modding and map makeing.

Thank you for your guys time,

Bigk

I'm in the same bode as you bigk. I too have very little experience with mapping, but wish to really give a good solid go at it. And since I got all the Source tools with my collector's edition of Half-Life 2, I might as well use the Source engine.

I'm seriously thinking of getting the book you listed (if that thing ever gets released) and then plan on going through the whole thing through the summer. :)

Hey there chaps,

Well, let me say first of all, you'll get just as good an education with 'Hammer' and valves SDK without spending a penny as you would if you bought the book.

There are hundereds of tutorials out there, video tuts, illustraited written tuts etc. Ill pass on the ones i have in my bookmarks:

http://gamewag.com/hl2.html
http://www.halfwit-2.com/
http://www.hl2world.com/wiki/index.php/Main_Page
http://www.interlopers.net/index.php?page=tutorials.htm
http://collective.valve-erc.com/
http://www.snarkpit.net/

and finally the valve wiki:

Okay, granted you'll find a lot of repeated tutorials, some offer different methods of using hammer. My advice to you is to start with a 'basic' room tutorial and think what youd like to add.... perhaps a door. Find a door tutorial, put in your 'level'. Maybe a displacement, find the tutorial, put it in your level.

The first few maps you shouldn't expect to look amazing, if your just trialing out the editor, just experiment with-in your maps.

hope this helps.
